AMD Officially Launches Ryzen 7 9850X3D at $499; 5.6 GHz Most Powerful Gaming Chip to Release on January 29

AMD’s latest and fastest Zen 5 desktop gaming processor is set to hit store shelves on January 29 for US$499, as announced by the company today. The Ryzen 7 9850X3D was officially unveiled at CES earlier this month and boasts a higher turbo frequency than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D straight out of the box. The 9850X3D replaces the 9800X3D as the fastest gaming processor, featuring the same core configuration but a higher boost clock to deliver noticeable performance gains.

The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D features 8 Zen 5-based cores and 16 threads, similar to the 9800X3D, but comes with a 5.6 GHz boost clock, which is 400 MHz higher than the boost clock of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The base clock remains unchanged at 4.7 GHz. There are no major changes to the new chip aside from the higher boost clock, and it retains the same 96 MB of L3 cache and the same 120 W TDP rating.

What you need to know about the AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D:

  • Building on the legacy of the 9800X3D, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D features a +400MHz improvement to the boost clock, making the world’s fastest gaming processor even faster.
  • The Ryzen 7 9850X3D provides up to an average 27% gaming performance improvement vs the Intel Core Ultra 9 285k
  • Thanks to 2nd Gen 3D V-Cache™ technology, high-frequency memory is not required. Across an average of 30+ games, the FPS difference between DDR5-4800 and DDR5-6000 was <1%.

- AMD

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D was launched in November 2024 at $479, while the 9850X3D is priced $20 higher. Earlier leaks had already suggested a $500 price point, and as AMD faces no direct competition in this segment, a higher price was expected. Even at $479, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D continues to sell exceptionally well, at times matching the combined sales of all Intel desktop processors across the LGA 1700 and LGA 1851 platforms. As such, the newer chip is expected to perform similarly in sales charts.
