AMD's upcoming Fluid Motion Frames 3 "AFMF 3" technology has been spotted in the latest drivers and might be coming soon.

AMD AFMF 3 "Fluid Motion Frames 3" Technology Spotted In Drivers, Possibly Launching With FSR Redstone Release

It looks like AMD's Fluid Motion Frames technology is going for a yearly upgrade. Back in 2023, AMD released Fluid Motion Frames, AFMF in short, as a frame-generation solution that can be toggled through the drivers rather than having in-game integration. This means that games that don't carry frame-gen or FSR support can still take advantage of boosted FPS and smoother gameplay. Furthermore, the tech was supported by a wider array of games based on FSR and FSR 2.

The follow-up to AFMF 1 came in the form of AFMF 2, which introduced various AI-based optimizations, further improving performance and reducing latency while supporting a wider array of GPUs. This was a welcome update, and soon after that, we got to see Fluid Motion Frames 2.1, which further improved the image quality, such as better temporal tracking, and also addressed some issues related to ghosting. New game support was also announced.

But this year, we may see another major upgrade to Fluid Motion Frames from AMD. As per the latest AMD Radeon software release, the driver has listed references to AFMF 3 or AMD Fluid Motion Frames 3. Based on the name alone, it looks like this could be a major update to AFMF, and as one user at Guru3D Forums points out, it could be coming with the 25.20 branch, which is expected to roll out with the FSR Redstone update.

The other name for AFMF 3 is "FrameGenV3," so we can expect an upgrade to the current frame-gen model used by Fluid Motion Frames. AMD's FSR Redstone, which is part of FSR 4, will be a breakthrough for AMD in the upscaling and frame-generation department. It brings several technologies, such as Machine Learning optimizations to upscaling/frame-gen, alongside Neural Radiance Caching and Path Tracing improvements to enhance image quality in ray-traced titles.

The technology will be competing against NVIDIA's DLSS 4 Ray Reconstruction, and it will be interesting to see how both fare against each other.

We expect AMD to add a similar level of optimization/improvement as Redstone to AFMF 3. Besides that, we would like for AMD to surprise us with other additions that they can make with the Fluid Motion Frames technology. FSR Redstone is expected soon, so expect more about AFMF 3 in the coming months.
