AirPods come with a new hidden capacitive button for pairing

"Its Glowtime" event was held on Monday, and it unveiled a plethora of devices with many noteworthy changes. Among the major upgrades, the earbuds saw quite a few advancements this time around, be it another variant of AirPod 4 with active noise cancelation or the AirPods Pro 2 featuring a comprehensive hearing health setup that would even allow for the accessory to work as a hearing aid. However, the features are not the only thing Apple has been working on, as the fourth-generation AirPods no longer rely on the physical Setup button at the back of the charging case. Instead, the company is now moving for a more seamless design.

Apple is stepping away from the Setup Button on the AirPods 4 and opting for a hidden capacitive button instead

Apple has generally used a physical Setup Button on the charging case for pairing devices or resetting the earbuds. However, it is now pivoting in a different direction by removing the need for a mechanical button and moving to a touch-sensitive option on the case. The capacitive button would work by detecting changes electrically when touched, allowing for a more seamless experience and a sleeker design without bumps.

According to Gear Patrol, the hidden button is said to be located on the front of the charging case. When users want to initiate pairing on the AirPods 4, they need to only open the charging case and double-tap at the front, and the job will be done. For factory resetting the device, users can try a press-and-hold gesture or even a triple tap.

This is not the only physical change brought forth. The lights on the AirPods 4 charging case are more subtle now compared to the previous generation. The LED dot is not evident when the case is closed or on charging. The light comes up as a dot on the lower part when the case is being charged or opened.

This time around, AirPods 4 comes in two versions, and the higher-end model features Active Noise Cancelation (ANC). The AirPods 4 is available for pre-order and will be launched on September 20th for those wanting to get their hands on the latest earbuds.
