Default Asus Motherboard P5w-DH Deluxe (Wi-Fi Edition)

have a problem, i purchased my motherboard in April last year, and did not open the packaging until i had bought the RAM to go into the motherboard, so 2 weeks later i tested the board, with no luck, after testingwhat could be wrong i sent it back (3 weeks later) the firm told me that the pins are bent on the processor socket and they would not replace it due to myself not reporting the problem within 2 days!

The board was sent back to me and on inspection there is also one pin broken off

Is there a way Asus could replace the socket totally?

Obviously i would be prepared to pay for this service

Or is it possible to replace the socket with an old socket of mine (i know it would require some delicate soldering)

Thanks

Sam

I don't believe Asus will attempt to repair the board. They are a manufacturer and are not set up for repair. It is far more cost effective for them to replace an imperfect card. At the same time any component they repaired would always be a question mark to both them and their customer. They will not risk their reputation on such a thing.

Attempting such a thing on your own is an option but not advisable. There is more involved than resoldering a trace. If it is not done just right, you introduce resistance into the trace which results in a hot spot underneath your processor, shortening it's life at best.

I think it will be cheaper to simply buy a new board than to risk both the board and the processor. If this is not an option for you, Google "circuit board repair" and see if you can find a company which will do this for you at less cost than replacing the board. They might offer a warranty.

Hope it works out for you,

I doubt that they would even try. Even if they would, I believe that the cost involved would be more expensive than buying a new board. I have many years experience with a soldering iron but I would not attempt it for the reasons I stated above. I suppose in theory that it's possible to do it yourself, but I believe that only time would tell if you were completely successful. Again, beyond the expertise required you run the risk of having it work at first only to discover failure on down the line (experience talking here). If this were to occur, you might lose a processor after a time of overall system instability. If you do try, use a low-wattage soldering iron with a brand new tip 60/40 solder for electronic components. If it looks good, try it out. Without a picture of the damage, I can only imagine what is involved. It may not be as damaged as I am guessing.

Luck to you,

i will post an image of the damaged socket here when i get one, is it possible to place in a pin from another motherboard which is dead by soldering? then i would simply have to re-align the pins that are out of position

thanks for the help, most i've had so far!

Such enthusiam is hard to deny. Brand new or super-clean pointed tip, lightly coat with solder before you start, use a magnifying glass to examine the result, use a dental pick if you link two pins with a solder bridge and ohm the new pin across both sides of the MB before you install the CPU.

Good luck!
