Great review man ! I didn't expect anything less than spectacular from you.. and you delivered baby ! This is no doubt one of the most comprehensive reviews of Vista I've read yet. For doing such a great job, you get a chocolate cake as reward.

I have been using windows vista ultimate for the last month or so and trust me.. its made my life much easier than what it was... it just grows on you over time and everything is running faster. I have installed windows xp, ultimate 32 bit and ultimate 64 bit and ran them all and 64 bit stole the show for speed and rock solid performance. there has been issue with few games (FEAR doesn't work on my system) but most of the game work flawlessly with a bit of tweaking to the vga settings....
I would say work well done microsoft...!! |

Excellent review indeed!
But I would disagree with your judgment on "removal of HW Sound Layer from OS" related part. Microsoft made a huge blunder with this move and suddenly the value of all the expensive Creative Sound cards has decreased. Not to forget the fact that huge number of games support EAX hardware sound effects. Currently Creative is running a project known as "Alchemy Project" to rectify the issue to some extent but very few Sound Cards are supported under it yet. So this is one huge drawback of gaming experience on Vista and this also shows that how much Microsoft really cares about customer preferences. Last edited by PAKI_LeGenD; 24-04-07 at 10:38 PM.. |

Overall great review but the only thing Vista is lacking behnid is their drivers. I installed Vista 2-3 days ago and then switched back to Xp.My DVD-Rom wasnt working fine. Rest was working fine and smoothly. Flip 3D is very addictive, i used to do that work hours.

The introduction of OpenAl in Vista is the way to go for the future. DX sound management would have posed increasing complexities in the way that you would have had two parallel Sound Layers working under the same OS. OpenAl has more depth and interoperability which can be exploited by future titles giving a more immersible experience.

Nice review.
Although I would hold out a little bit longer before making a permanent plunge towards Vista, i'm a bit put-off by some of it's obstrusive features, such as DRM, UAC and pinging home servers on every restart. In my opinion, the user no longer has the absolute control in their hands in the OS, and that the OS can be crippled at just a whim by Microsoft if they seem something unlawful. And about losing the EAX functionality and hardware acceleration for creative cards, like it or not, but the majority of problems users have experienced so far in XP was simply due to outdated or bad coded sound drivers. By sticking to a simpler implementation, it removes the overhead that was added to the directX interface due to the directsound calls being done by the hardware, which resides on the PCI interface, which is quite slow as compared to the communication being done on the PCI-e interface. And since, the onboard audio solutions have already killed most of the market for creative, this will be a nail in the coffin for creative by sticking it to their customers for so long. Even now, their drivers leave alot to be desired. The WDDM model needs alot of work to be done before it can finally be on the level XP's driver model. Though one distinction i felt when I switched from 98SE to XP was that everything was overall alot smoother. However from XP to Vista, I can't really say the same. |

the only thing you lack in your review is the most major issue of vista. DRM

Solution to DRM and activation.............Get pre activated windows branded for OEMs like Dell's working in my PC. Never to worry about activation or DRM.
Solution to UAC.........Enable Administrator account....Log off from your name....login as administrator, and delete all other users and never see UAC popups again.......... |

Excellent review! There was plenty to cover and all of it was done in a detailed and orderly manner. I've been using Vista for a month as well, and my experience has been pretty good! I was also thinking of switching to the 64 - bit edition. Is the upgrade version available in the markets?
