Unfortunately, you are out of luck here, mate. Totally, speaking that is. You won't find an all-in-one solution that handles it all. Some have a queue system but are broke (as Youtube changes it's steaming mechanism). Some that do, only download FLV files. One decent one I saw (Youtube Downloader HD, link below) has all the options with support of upto 720p videos, but it can't differentiate between them. You can't auto set it to download the best quality video (HD, MP4, hi-res FLV, and low-rs FLV). And to top it off, you have to insert one video link in at a time.

There was another one Tomato Youtube Downloader, which had a half decent interface, but it always got stuck at 50-80%, and has no option to pause or resume the download. I know, big mess. Try this one out for the time being. It's free:

I will suggest Orbit Downloader's Grab++. I have used it countless time and it works absolutely OK. It captures both SD and HD streaming links as well as other flash content, images etc

Here is a step by step method from my other post which I wrote previously.

There is a proper step by step method. It can be accessed by clicking action button in grab++ and then selecting tutorial from the list.

Step by step procedure is:-

1) Run orbit download manager.
2) Right Click on Orbit Downloader system tray icon and then select Grab++ from the list.
3) View the video you want to download in web browser.
4) Check the box in Grab++ and then click download.
5) Orbit downloader will take over from here and download the video to any location you specify.

One thing more. Download capture will work only at the time when video is buffering for the first time in browser. If the browser is loading the video from HDD cache that was saved earlier link to download video won't appear in Grab++.

To avoid this problem one can either clear cookies/browser cache/history etc or use a private browsing session of Internet Explore 8.0/FireFox 3.5 or incognito mode of Chrome.

Yeah, well Stick, that's the manual way to do things (and one that I do, I use either keepvid.com or clipnabber.com). The keyword here is automation. Just putting in a link of videos in a text file, and inserting them in the program and it automatically queues them up and downloads the best possible quality of each video one by one. See, what's so hard about that, LOL.

Now, I've used Orbit Downloader, and well if you go and download the FlashGot extension for Firefox, it has a media grabber, and it will grab the direct links for any MP3, song, video, Youtube, Gametrailers, heck pretty much anything, and pass that over to be downloaded by the browser or your download manager. Much more convenient. And it also supports a whole lot of download managers. Still, it is a lot of manual work to if one has a list of videos to grab. For this there are sites like Keepvid that come to the rescue. Anyway, get it here from:

guys, XVideoServiceThief is the ultimate software for youtube and 73 other video sharing websites. I havent seen any youtube grabber which has this many features.

I have been using it for an year or so. Have downloaded Gigs of videos from it and the only trouble i have got is that it crashes sometimes but apart from this error, the software Rocks

Features:
  • Import youtube links from text file.
  • Drag and drop the youtube links
  • Bulk download of youtube videos
  • Schedule downloads
  • Pause and resume downloads
  • Automatic conversion of videos to any format.
  • Works on windows, Linux and MAc
  • And best of all its free and open source

Pretty good software, Navid. But unfortunately it doesn't do all that I wanted, namely queuing up to download the best quality video (even if it is HD or MP4). From the initial impression, it just gets the middle of the road, FLV file. Pity. The software looks pretty decent, otherwise, particularly if one needs easier accessibility at the sacrifice of better/higher quality.
