Among the games rumored to launch in the coming months on Nintendo Switch 2 is a The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. Little is known about this project, but today, some additional details on the remake of one of the best games of all time have been shared by Nash Weedle.
Speaking during the latest episode of the Attack The Backlog podcast, the leaker said the developers are rebuilding the entire game from scratch for this remake. The leaker first heard about the project back in 2022, at which point the studio was hiring creative and artistic leads.
Regarding the art direction, the developers are reportedly experimenting with the art style, and while there are no concrete indications of which direction has been taken, the leaker stated the remake is being treated as a high-budget project. There are strong clues suggesting that Monolith Soft, the developers of Xenoblade Chronicles, who also supported the development of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, is either the primary developer or heavily involved.
As for when the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake will be announced, Nash Weedle expects a reveal during the next major Nintendo Direct next month, where a late 2026 release date will also be confirmed. This project, alongside another new original 2D project which will use the Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom engine, is meant to coincide with the franchise's 40th anniversary and the launch of the live-action movie in May 2027.
With the popularity this Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is sure to have, it is not surprising to learn that Nintendo could be treating it as the high-profile project it deserves. As June's typical gaming showcases are right around the corner, it won't take long to learn if this remake is indeed in the works, and if it will be launched alongside a Zelda-themed limited edition Nintendo Switch 2 to celebrate the franchise's 40th anniversary in style.
