Over time, YouTube viewers have started relying more on adblockers due to constant interruptions and security concerns about deceptive advertising. How many times have you had to skip an ad and been annoyed by the recurring intrusion? This feeling is common for most Americans, as a recent study claimed that a large number of users in America block ads.
Recently, an issue regarding YouTube videos surfaced, and many users have expressed their confusion about the content skipping either to the end of the video or suddenly being muted. This makes it almost impossible for the affected people to have a seamless screen experience, and the issue is not just limited to specific videos but extends overall. Google has now shared its side of the story.
YouTube explains the reason for interrupted video experiences recently on the platform, especially for users with ad blockers
Earlier, we covered the issue with YouTube acting up lately, especially when the video is being reloaded, or you go on with clicking on the start of the video. Users took to Reddit to share their experiences with the disruptions faced on the video platform, and quite a few even laid accusations on the streaming giant, suggesting that people behind this are intentionally putting the hiccups in place with the videos. The issue somehow ceased to exist once people using adblockers uninstalled them, making them believe even firmly that this was a well-thought-out move by Google to stop people from using blockers to avoid ads.
Skeptical feelings regarding this issue can be attributed to YouTube taking more strict measures to discourage users from using third-party adblockers and sending notices to avid consumers that the blockers violate its terms of service. The company has been quite active in this regard for the past few months. A similar issue occurred in January when users who had Adblock or Adblock Plus installed complained about poor performance. Later on, it was reported that the cause of the problem was actually a compromised update on the extension.
A recent update reported by 9to5Google shares YouTube's statement on the ongoing issue. YouTube states that the issue does not stem from its earlier crackdown on adblockers but instead is caused by the ongoing processes to provide an optimal YouTube experience with improved performance. It reiterated how the company still discourages adblockers and, in fact, that they go against the terms of service. The company also suggested ways to allow ads simultaneously to the adblockers in place on its support page.
In the explanation by the streaming platform, all the accusations were laid to rest, and the reasoning for the disruptions was given. YouTube explained:
Ad blockers violate YouTube’s Terms of Service, and we’ve been urging users for some time to support their favorite creators and allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad-free experience. An unrelated push to improve YouTube’s performance and reliability may be resulting in suboptimal viewing experiences for ad blocker users.
With the performance changes underway, it might be that the ongoing enhancements are interrupting the adblockers in place. We cannot be certain whether this issue is only limited to people using the blockers, as one user went ahead with claiming that the interruptions were still faced even when no advertising blockers were used. As a streaming platform, YouTube should ensure a seamless experience with the platform and promptly tackle any issues that lead to a poor experience. Transparency should also be present when taking actions that might impact users greatly.
