Yoshi and the Mysterious Book Arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 in May 2026

The last general Nintendo Direct event took place in September 2025, and while we've had several Nintendo Direct events this year (like two Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct events), we're still waiting for 2026 to get its first big Direct event. Unfortunately, this year's iteration of Mario Day so far has not included a surprise Direct announcement, but we did get a release date for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book on the Nintendo Switch 2, the game that closed out September's Direct.

It's frankly still a bit shocking that the Direct event that revealed several ways Nintendo was celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros franchise closed out with the reveal of a Yoshi game instead of a Mario game, but hopefully, we won't have to wait too much longer to learn what Mario's next mainline adventure will entail.

In the meantime, Nintendo Switch 2 owners can look forward to playing Yoshi and the Mysterious Book on May 21, 2026.

The gameplay trailer above shows how you'll interact with and catalogue creatures you encounter in this new 2D adventure for Nintendo's green dinosaur, which basically boils down to just eating everything you can and suffering the consequences, like discovering a creature that blows bubbles tasting like soap.

It also seems like it's yet another twist on how you can possess creatures in Super Mario Odyssey and use their abilities, since you can carry the creature on your back and use its abilities to reach new areas you couldn't already reach. You can also experiment by giving creatures different foods to adjust what their abilities do, with each new discovery adding a star to your collection.

Earning enough stars opens up new areas and is how you progress in the game, which makes it seem like it'll have what is hopefully a fairly interesting gameplay loop of experimenting in each area to unlock new gameplay mechanics.
