Google made some major announcements at I/0 2O25 event. While the limelight remained on the AI initiatives and the ambitious approach to the technology, the XR glasses also managed to grab quite a few eyeballs, especially with the control it allows users over how immersive the experience could be. The tech giant showcased mixed reality glasses and their capabilities, as well as made another important revelation about XREAL working on expanding the Android XR ecosystem.

Project Aura is XREAL's next big project as Google pushes further for an extended reality experience, and would be the second Android XR headset

Google has made it quite evident that it is not only working on the AI front but is also keen on expanding its Android XR initiative, with a focus on launching Project Moohan in partnership with Samsung. Now, the company seems to be going even further by extending to include the XREAL device as well. While announcing its partnership with Warby Parker, another important development was talked about, and that was XREAL working on the second Android XR headset, which will be called Project Aura.

XREAL is known for its lightweight XR devices, such as its Air glasses, which are not only sleek but also comfortable to wear. The Project Aura is said to follow the lightweight format of the existing product line and will be an optical see-through device. While the details on Project Aura are sparse, we know that the hardware would be compact and would stand out from the existing bulky VR headsets.

Project Aura would be powered by a Snapdragon XR chipset, which is explicitly designed for XR devices by Qualcomm. This chipset allows for processing power that can help with an immersive AR experience and support capabilities like spatial tracking and real-time visuals without lag in performance. XREAL, while talking about Project Aura, added that more details would be available in June during the Augmented World Expo.

We are excited to get more insights on this upcoming project as Google works on expanding its XR ecosystem.
