After skipping the 16th series label for its upcoming smartphone lineup and jumping straight to the 17-series numbering convention, plausibly in a bid to remain abreast with Apple's iPhone 17 lineup, Xiaomi has now accelerated the launch timeline of its next-gen flagship cell phones.

To wit, Xiaomi has now announced via a dedicated Weibo post that the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max smartphones will go on sale at 7 p.m. (Beijing time) on September 25. Do note that the rumor mill had previously identified September 30 as the most likely launch date for Xiaomi's latest smartphone lineup.

This accelerated launch timeline appears to be in response to Apple's relative success with its iPhone 17 series in China, where one Wall Street analyst after another is coming forward to note the stretched lead times for Apple's latest flagship offering, highlighting a healthy demand trend for the nascent lineup.

For instance, Bank of America (BofA) analyst, Wamsi Mohan, highlighted in a note out today that "our tracking of iPhone ship dates on Apple’s own website, and various carrier websites, indicates that as of Sep 22nd, ship time (in days) for the iPhone 17 (18 days) are more extended vs last year’s iPhone 16 (10 days)."

The analyst went on to note that "as of Sep 22nd, ship time (in days) for the iPhone 17 (18 days) are more extended vs last year’s iPhone 16 (10 days)," adding that "the ship dates for the iPhone 17 are the highest in China, with demand likely driven by 1) 15% government subsidy on electronics for which the iPhone 17 base variant is eligible and 2) unavailability of iPhone Air in China as carriers await regulatory approval."

Xiaomi 17 Pro And Pro Max Have A Trick Up Their Sleeves

Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are expected to come with the Magic Back Screen, a small display at the back of the smartphone which can show a clock, images, widgets, and even a camera viewfinder. Xiaomi already tested this feature in its 11-series smartphones, albeit in a much smaller form factor.

This feature comes at a cost though, as the Xiaomi 17 Pro only supports a dual camera setup as opposed to the triple camera array on the Apple iPhone 17 Pro. A Xiaomi 17 Pro Max render also featured a third camera module below the primary one, which is likely to be an ultra-wide angle camera lens.

Xiaomi claimed in a separate Weibo post that its upcoming 17-series smartphone lineup is its "most significant leap forward." Notably, its base smartphone is expected to experience no price hikes, despite a material performance upgrade, thanks to Qualcomm's most advanced processor to date: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC.

Do note that the Xiaomi 15 smartphone launched at a price point of 4,499 CNY or around $630. This means that the upcoming base variant of the Xiaomi 17 lineup is also expected to launch at around this price point.
