Qualcomm was believed to stick with a chronological naming scheme for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, making it a better representation of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 successor. However, thanks to a Xiaomi 15 launch teaser, we have learned what could be the official name of the upcoming SoC, and just to give you a hint, it is similar to the Snapdragon X Elite found in various Windows-powered notebooks.
Snapdragon 8 Elite to be the official name of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, with Qualcomm possibly dropping the chronological name schemes from hereon
Prior to the Snapdragon X Elite’s unveiling, rumors referred to the chipset as the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4, as it was perceived that Qualcomm would ideally give its Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 successor an appropriate name. Sadly, it was not to be, and we were greeted with the Snapdragon X Elite instead. For the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which is scheduled to be announced next month, a Xiaomi 15 launch teaser for the Chinese market is doing the rounds, focusing on the official name of the chipset.
Apparently, instead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, Qualcomm’s first 3nm SoC would be called Snapdragon 8 Elite, making it sound similar to the Snapdragon X Elite. Based on the teaser below, the Xiaomi 15 range will launch on October 23, meaning that the Snapdragon 8 Elite will be announced before. We can understand that this naming scheme can cause confusion, but it appears that Qualcomm will stamp the ‘Elite’ name next to its top-end silicon, with the less capable version possibly getting treated to the ‘Plus’ moniker.
We speculate that, like the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, Qualcomm would have prepared a slower version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, and it might sport the name ‘Snapdragon 8 Plus.’ We might also have to prepare ourselves for a different chipset name for Samsung’s Galaxy S25 family, as all three models could be treated to the ‘Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy.’ Obviously, nothing is set in stone right now, so we will update our readers on the latest. Thankfully, the official announcement will be held next month, so there is not much time left for us to get to the bottom of this.
