Less than a year ago, Wizards of the Coast announced that it would publish a single player action/adventure game based on its Dungeons & Dragons IP and developed by Giant Skull, the new studio founded in 2024 by God of War III and Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order & Survivor director Stig Asmussen.

That project was short-lived, though. As first reported by Bloomberg, Wizards of the Coast canceled it earlier this year as part of a periodic review of upcoming projects. A company spokesperson told Bloomberg:

We assess concepts at every stage of development. While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship.

Bloomberg also reached out to Asmussen, who reassured them that "things are good at Giant Skull" and he was already talking to other companies about other publishing deals. However, it isn't clear whether the project will survive under a different brand. On the other hand, the improved motion model Asmussen mentioned last year will likely be used in the studio's next projects, as that's the developer's work.

This is not the only D&D game to be canceled recently. In October, Starbreeze canceled the co-op game codenamed Project Baxter to refocus on its PAYDAY franchise. Thus, the only D&D game officially in development is Invoke's single player action/adventure game Warlock, although in an interview with The Game Business, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks hints there's at least an unannounced D&D game in the works.

Overall, Hasbro is investing $1 billion over a decade to develop triple-A games (not live-service titles) based on its core IPs, such as Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.
