what to expect at WWDC 2024

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is taking place tomorrow, June 10th at 10 AM PT. On the 35th WWDC, we are expecting Apple to launch iOS 18, macOS 15, iPadOS 18, and much more with AI integration throughout the product range. So far, from the reports and the speculations up till now, we are assuming the company would be heavily focused on software, with no hardware upgrades expected. While we have curated a list of several announcements on the upcoming keynote and what should be expected from it, you should still brace yourself for any last-minute surprises.

We can expect Apple to announce new software updates for its products at WWDC 2024, but the hardware front could remain silent

Based on several reports, Apple has been working on its generative AI technology since 2022, and now we will finally see what the company has been cooking. AI will be part of nearly all updates, transforming the user experience with major functionality gains.

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18

The software updates would mainly revolve around AI in the iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates, which go hand-in-hand. Apple has been taking its time with artificial intelligence, but with its ongoing efforts, the announcements might be the company's biggest move for software in a decade. The AI acronym would now be replaced by Apple Intelligence to better represent the company's unique approach to the capabilities, and that is to use it to make daily lives easier.

Apple will not fully launch the features but instead, release them in beta preview to ensure vigilance in testing the upgrades before completely rolling them out. The good thing about the AI functions is that you can choose not to use them with the opt-in option, which pays heed to consumer choice and ease.

The company would use both on-device and cloud-based approaches to handle the tasks at hand, and for the cloud-based provisions, security and privacy would be ensured. Some of the advancements coming to the iOS 18 are:

Siri

Siri is expected to be completely revamped, with advanced capabilities that entertain multiple commands and use a more natural tone for easier communication. The virtual assistant would use large language models (LLMs) to perform functions such as summarizing documents, summarizing notifications, editing photos, and assisting with in-app experiences. The enhanced capabilities will be announced with iOS 18, but it might come with a future update later this year or early next year.

Stock Apps

AI integration is coming to the stock apps as well for a seamless user experience. Improvements will be made in the health app, calendars, voice memos, photos, mail, and many other applications that have not made it to the leaks yet.

OpenAI Collaboration

Apple is said to have sealed the deal to bring ChatGPT like technology to iOS 18. The features will be available for opt-in for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 users and would extend to other devices as well in the future.

Home Screen

The home screen would come with more customization options where you can rearrange app icons in a different way than what we are used to. Users can even play around with the colors of the icons and not stick strictly to the company's stock color grid. The Control Center would also feature a drag-and-drop interface with support for multiple pages.

Passwords App

The update would bring a standalone Password app that operates outside the settings, allowing for quick access and streamlined data management. The iCloud Keychain would be used to sync it across devices.

Messages

Users can create customized emojis that best suit the context of the conversation with the help of AI and emojis in reactions. Apple will also announce Rich Communication Service (RCS) for its devices to improve communication with Android users.

macOS 15

Many AI features would be common in iOS 18 and macOS 15 for a seamless experience across the Apple ecosystem. These features include advancements in Siri's capabilities and new features added to apps such as Photos, Notes, Mail, and Apple Music.

watchOS 11

Apple's wearable will also receive AI-infused features to create a personalized experience with customized on-the-go tasks, but extensive details were not part of the rumor mill.

tvOS 18

The updates for tvOS are normally not as hyped as other upgrades, and limited information is available as to what we might expect to be part of the Apple TV. It eventually has not been revealed, but AI would be brought across platforms for better communication between devices.

visionOS 2

Vision Pro might see varied and customized versions of Apple apps with many other AI-powered features. The new apps will also be making their way to the headset for seamless communication,  better password management, and much more.

The WWDC will be live-streamed on Monday, and the keynote will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. If you are planning to watch the WWDC event live, check out when it will begin in your time zone.
