The Kirin 9020 debuted in the Mate 70 family last year, and although Huawei had little choice but to stick with SMIC’s older 7nm process for this chipset, the company still managed to introduce a few tweaks, resulting in a slight performance and efficiency uplift. Now, according to the latest rumor, the former Chinese giant is said to resort to the same approach for the Pura 80 lineup, with a tipster claiming that an upgraded Kirin 9020 will be a part of the specifications, along with camera improvements.
Based on the latest rumor, Huawei will announce the new Pura 80 series with the improved Kirin 9020 in June later this year
The rumor was posted by Weibo’s Smart Pikachu, who not only mentions an upgraded Kirin 9020 arriving to the Pura 80 models, but also a new imaging module that will function with lightning pace and accuracy to capture those stills in the blink of an eye. Additionally, the company is said to introduce better stabilization for video and image capture, with both the software and hardware fronts being fully ‘prepared’ for the upcoming launch. Also, it does not look like we will have to wait too long for the announcement, because Huawei is said to launch the Pura 80 range sometime in June.
While there have been multiple reports claiming that Huawei has been setting up chip-manufacturing facilities on its home turf, it is unlikely that we will witness any current-generation Kirin SoC leverage the advanced lithography. In short, it is possible that the upgraded Kirin 9020 will stick with SMIC’s 7nm process, with the only improvements coming from the increased CPU and GPU clock speeds. However, Huawei’s trump card for the Pura 80 series lies in its HarmonyOS platform, and through software optimization, the company could squeeze out more battery life and performance from its devices.
In terms of technological benefits, the upgraded Kirin 9020 might not be any different from the regular version. Unless Huawei migrates to an improved manufacturing process that improves upon the 7nm technology, we do not see the company bringing massive changes to its chipset division. However, there are other perks to look forward to when the Pura 80 lineup officially launches, so stay tuned for more updates.
