After getting a small tease from actor Peter Stormare, it was finally revealed during today's State of Play that yes, Until Dawn 2 is coming, though not from Supermassive Games. Instead, it's being made by Horizon: Call of the Mountain developers, Firesprite Games, and it'll arrive on PS5 sometime in 2027.
The game is not some attempt at a continuation of the story from the first game, but is instead a standalone experience with brand new characters and a new cast behind it, and "true to form, a modern horror experience packed with intrigue, emotion, twists, and the kind of choices that will keep you up at night," writes Firesprite Games in a PlayStation Blog post.
For the sequel, we've gone from young adults being attacked by Wendigos to a crew of young ghost-hunting adults looking for footage to bolster their popular YouTube channel. It's definitely a modern approach to the start of this horror adventure, but it's still one that offers plenty of excitement.
Of course, things go south very quickly once they arrive on the game's island setting, and what was previously a fun life of scares that Firesprite describes as "a little staged" becomes all too real.
"Having just signed a deal with a big TV network, the crew gets shipped off to an abandoned tropical island for their first fully funded episode. At first, it’s all sun, sand, secrets… plus some very not-safe-for-the-workplace drama as their complicated relationships bubble to the surface," the PlayStation Blog post reads.
"Here at Firesprite, we took the reins on Until Dawn 2 as our first release since Horizon: Call of the Mountain, where we collaborated with our friends at Guerrilla Games. Like many of you, a bunch of us on the team are massive fans of the original Until Dawn, so getting to build the sequel has been a dream come true. Part of our mission from day one has been honoring that core DNA: character drama, tough choices, and those unforgettable horror moments that made the first game so special."
We'll learn more about Until Dawn 2's gameplay soon, according to Firesprite, and it'll be interesting to see how the studio chooses to evolve the game and its formula. While we know certain things will be familiar, like impossible choices and the return of the aforementioned Peter Stormare, there could be some major gameplay changes under Firesprite's sleeve.
Or they could make a run-of-the-mill version of what Supermassive might've done if they were the ones at the helm of a sequel. We'll see when it arrives in 2027.
