Deck13, the developer of The Surge series and the recently released Atlas Fallen, is going to develop its next major project codenamed Foxtrot using Unreal Engine 5.

As confirmed by German publication Games Wirtschaft, the studio is not going to leave its Fledge engine behind immediately, as the studio is continuing to work on Atlas Fallen, planning to introduce a variety of improvements and release the Wielder of the Gods expansion next year. The studio's Unreal Engine 5-powered project Foxtrot is planned for 2026 and will be subsidized by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs with more than €5 million.

With so many developers moving on to the Unreal Engine 5, it seems like the latest version of the engine by Epic will power the biggest games launching in the coming years. Among the studios that have moved onto the engine is CD Projekt Red, which is developing the next entry in The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 series with it. The passage to UE5 development is proving for the Polish developer to be a challenge but also an opportunity, as there's space to do something awesome with it, according to Cyberpunk 2077 lead quest designer Pavel Sasko.

As mentioned above, the last game by Deck13 to be powered by the Fledge engine before moving on to the Unreal Engine 5 is Atlas Fallen. You can learn more about it in my review.

With its unique premise and setting, Atlas Fallen could have been one of the best action games of the year, but its mediocre combat system, dull open-world areas, and lack of interesting characters drag the experience down. The full package ends up being just a decent game for those willing to look past its most critical shortcomings.
