TUXEDO Computers now plans to bring Qualcomm's Snapdragon X CPU platform on Linux through an upcoming laptop.
It Seems Like Linux Will Be Able To Leverage Snapdragon X CPUs Through TUXEDO's Upcoming Laptop
Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X SoCs have taken the industry by storm, and it's no surprise that system integrators are rushing to feature the latest chips in their product lineup, given that the AI PC hype is stronger than ever.
Interestingly, Qualcomm's Snapdragon X SKUs have made their way into Linux, courtesy of TUXEDO Computers, who have disclosed that they are developing an ARM notebook using the Snapdragon X Elite SoC, and the firm showcased a prototype of the laptop at this year's Computex.
While the firm hasn't revealed details about the laptop, the description on the prototype revealed that it features Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite X1E80100 CPU, which features a 12-core count along with the onboard Adreno GPU cores. Moreover, the device comes with a 2560 x 1600 14-inch IPS display with 400 nits of brightness and 100% sRGB rating. It also has 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1x PCIe Gen4 SSD slot. We have been working with a first prototype for some time, which will soon be replaced by a second one. The development is still in the alpha stage, as some drivers are still missing, which will hopefully be available with the next two kernel versions.
It is quite conceivable that an ARM notebook from TUXEDO will be under your Christmas tree in 2024. However, there are still too many pieces of the hardware, software and delivery capability puzzle missing to even begin to set a release date. TUXEDO for ARM will come, but we don’t yet know exactly when.
In terms of support of Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite CPUs on Linux, the team has been consistently working on enablement on Linux, and the firm has revealed a roadmap previously when it comes to what they plan on working on:
- End-to-end hardware video decoding, on Firefox and Chrome
- Implementation of the libcamera-SoftISP camera solution
- GPU and CPU performance optimizations
- Power optimizations (Suspend/DCVS)
- Making our firmware openly available (in Linux-firmware)
- Access to easy installers (Ubuntu and Debian)
It seems like Linux users will soon be able to harness the power of Snapdragon X Elite CPUs, and due to the OS's open-source nature, expect massive platform developments.
