As 2025 draws to a close, TSMC is about to press the button on 2nm production, with a myriad of clients just waiting to get their hands on chip designs that have been mass produced on the next-generation lithography. Thanks to incredibly high demand for these wafers, the Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing giant’s two facilities are completely booked for the entirety of 2026, with output slated to reach an impressive 100,000 monthly units next year.
Pilot production of 2nm wafers is currently underway, with mass production reportedly kicking off by the end of 2025
The two 2nm production plants located in Hsinchu and Kaohsiung are yet to commence full-scale production, at least, according to Dan Nystedt, who states that both facilities are currently in the pilot manufacturing stages. The yields are said to be at 70 percent, which is puzzling to learn because TSMC’s trial production run that we talked about last year achieved a similar milestone.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has commented that TSMC’s 2nm yield would be higher than the figure achieved during the trial production run, but according to the latest update, it remains at 70 percent. Also, the United Daily News report shared by Dan makes no mention of the 100,000 monthly output that would be achieved during mid-2026, but he states in his thread on X that TSMC’s advanced packaging capacity is also fully booked and can reach 150,000 monthly wafers next year.
The report does not mention which TSMC customer has placed the biggest order, but we previously mentioned that Apple had secured more than half of the initial 2nm capacity to keep rivals like Qualcomm and MediaTek at bay. The first iteration of TSMC’s cutting-edge lithography is being referred to as N2, which will be followed by N2P. The price of each wafer is estimated to be a whopping $30,000.
This figure might appear pricey, but TSMC’s customers will quickly learn that it is a bargain because the manufacturer is reported to raise the prices of its 3nm ‘N3E’ and 3nm ‘N3P’ technologies to $25,000 and $27,000, respectively.
