TSMC’s 2nm Production Is In Full Swing, One Plant Has Already Reached 20,000 Monthly Wafers, As Demand Surge Could Eclipse 3nm Requirements Soon

A major milestone has reportedly been achieved by TSMC as the world’s largest semiconductor foundry races to complete its transition from the 3nm process to the 2nm one. One of the company’s plants has reached 20,000 monthly wafers as it prepares to begin shipping chips for a long list of customers.

A total of five fabs located in Taiwan are solely focused on 2nm production, according to Economic Daily News. Out of the five, Fab 20 has obtained the 20,000-wafer milestone as the semiconductor giant moves at an accelerated pace to sate demand for its latest and greatest lithography. Even without any of TSMC’s customers announcing or shipping silicon fabricated on the 2nm node, the advanced process contributed to 3 percent of the firm’s Q3 2026 revenue.

What’s even more impressive is that during TSMC’s previous earnings call, the wafer manufacturer stated that its 2nm process had four times as many tape-outs compared to the 3nm node, indicating the robust demand for the new manufacturing process. While AI chips leveraging the new lithography are expected to arrive later, Google and Apple will introduce their first 2nm SoCs, starting from next month.

The Pixel 11 series will likely feature the Tensor G6 when the new lineup is unveiled in August, followed by Apple’s A20 Pro, which will fuel the iPhone 18’s innards during its September launch. While TSMC’s 2nm process has achieved a tremendous milestone from Fab 20, its 3nm node still holds the lead when strictly comparing wafer figures. At 175,000 monthly units, the 3nm lithography continues to be in high demand.

Fortunately, with the passage of time, AI customers will eventually gravitate to the new process, and TSMC will have a new money maker on its hands. AMD has already announced that its MI455X GPU, designed for Agentic AI, will also utilize TSMC’s 2nm process, with NVIDIA’s Rubin to eventually compete with its rival.
