Trump Mobile’s T1 Phone Powered Up With An HTC Logo After iFixit Swapped Its Mainboard For The U24 Pro’s, Exposing The T1 As A Clone

A gold-trimmed smartphone with 'TRUMP MOBILE' displayed on its blue screen stands next to a matching box.

You might give Trump Mobile's T1 Phone a pass on its gaudy paint job, one that equates a garish shade of yellow to burnished gold. But, will you be as generous if you found out that the T1 is essentially a re-packaged mid-tier Android phone that launched back in 2024, and that Trump Mobile gimped its battery to price it at $499?

Trump Mobile's T1 Phone is reportedly being sold at an "introductory price" of $499, while the HTC U24 Pro is currently available for around $557

Trump Mobile had made the T1 Phone's supposedly made-in-America credentials a central part of its marketing blitz in the early days of the smartphone's inception. While the company later watered down its branding to "assembled in America," the latest teardown from iFixit would call even this re-styled tag a stretch.

According to iFixit, Trump Mobile did try to slightly change the HTC U24 Pro to create some differentiation, but ended up implementing only minor, purely cosmetic alterations.

For instance, the positioning of the camera and flash LED on the T1 Phone is slightly different from that on the HTC U24 Pro. However, this position change was achieved by simply lengthening the flex cable, while the "spring finger contacts on the flash hadn’t moved at all."

Also, the T1 Phone's speaker grille have holes that have been drilled in a slightly different manner, but the underlying speakers are the same, located in exactly the same place. Essentially, the T1 Phone is a manifestation of the form-over-function mentality: try to create just enough differences to maintain plausible deniability in the eyes of a casual buyer.

Egregiously, both the HTC U24 Pro and the T1 Phone sport a 6.8-inch screen, but Trump Mobile continues to assert that the T1 has a 6.78-inch screen. Perhaps, the company thinks casual buyers won't be able to measure the 0.2mm difference via a standard ruler. iFixit goes on to note:

"Both screens utilise a PenTile display using Samsung’s patented Diamond Pixel arrangement. A side by side comparison of the two displays using Evident Microscopy’s DSX2000 clearly shows a perfect match between the two panels both in pixel density and layout."

And, as for the biggest clue, apparently the same factory made the mainboard for the HTC U24 Pro as well as the T1 Phone. Also, while the SoC is the same, "the multichip package housing 12GB LPDDR5 and 512GB storage [on the T1] is from Micron," while iFixit claims its HTC U24 Pro test unit uses a package from SK Hynix, a change that might have been prompted by supply chain limitations. In fact, iFixit swapped the T1's board for the one in the U24, and the T1 powered up with an HTC logo!

To be fair, the battery is different, with the one on the T1 Phone rated at 19.35Wh vs. a rating of 17.23Wh for the one on the U24 Pro. Also, the T1 comes with a 30W charger while the HTC U24 Pro packs a 60W one.

For the benefit of those who might not be aware, the T1 Phone's other specs include a 50MP main rear camera and selfie camera, a 5,000mAh battery, 512GB of storage, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Now let's discuss pricing. A 128GB HTC U24 Pro is currently available for around $470, while its 512GB variant retails for as much as $557. This means that to the price the T1 Phone at $499, Trump Mobile compromised on the battery, while also likely attracting volume-based discounts from HTC for its 2-year-old smartphone. Of course, with memory prices on a relentless upward track, it is hardly a surprise that Trump Mobile is already positioning the $499 retail tag as an "introductory price," claiming only that the new price tag for the T1 Phone would be "less than $1,000."

Of course, given the T1 Phone's limited availability and the nauseatingly yellow color scheme, you are better off sticking a few American flag stickers to the HTC U24 Pro to satisfy your patriotic cravings.
