A few days ago, Nokia had announced the beginning of an open beta for Android 8.1 for Nokia 8 users. HMD Global has been pretty snappy with rolling out Oreo for all their devices, with almost all of them in varying stages of receiving the update. Their flagship device, the Nokia 8, was the first to receive Oreo and as expected, it is the first to receive the Oreo 8.1 update. Today, HMD Global product manager Juho Sarvikas Tweeted

The update is about 1.5GB in size and brings all the Oreo 8.1 goodies to the Nokia 8. Some of the features include a translucent notification center and taskbar, a redesigned settings menu, the ability to see Bluetooth device battery levels in the Quick Settings panel when a Bluetooth accessory is connected to your phone and most importantly, the February security patch. You can expect the update to hit your device soon, and it may take a while, as it is being rolled out incrementally.
Several Vivo devices to get a taste of Oreo
Let's face it, the number of devices running Android Oreo is low, compared to older versions of Android. So, it's always good to see new devices jump on the Oreo bandwagon and this time around it's a rather unexpected lot.
Vivo announced that several of their devices would receive the Oreo update, in an official post on their website. The reason it came as a surprise is because Vivo is a budget-oriented brand and many of their devices almost never receive any major OS upgrades. Here's a list of Vivo devices that will receive the Oreo update:
- X20
- X20 Plus
- X9s
- Xplay6
- X9
- X9s Plus
- X9 Plus
As expected, the actual release is preceded by a beta program. It'll get support for “smart assistants,” “word books,” and “other functions,” according to the announcement. It could be months before the actual update hits the devices, but you can be assured that an update is in the works. The above devices are low tier, even in Vivo's standards. There is still no word on an Oreo update for older, higher-priced devices yet. It could be a while, considering that Vivo devices run a heavily customized Android fork, known as Funtouch OS.
Oreo update for Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+ suspended
Last week, Samsung rolled out the much-awaited Android Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The first recipients of the update would be the people who participated in the beta program. For non-beta devices, it was first deployed in Germany, followed by other markets such as Turkey, Norway, the UAE, India, Belgium, Germany, France, and Poland and was to be released in the Netherlands next week.
However, it looks like Samsung has halted the rollout for now. According to some research done by Sammobile, it can now be confirmed that Samsung has pulled Oreo for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. The G950/G955-FXXU1CRAP (heh) Android 8.0 firmware files for these handsets are no longer available for download on Samsung’s servers. Several users have already received the update and they will remain unaffected.
