The Elder Scrolls VI was announced eight years ago, and we have heard very little about the game since other than rumors regarding its Hammerfell setting. While the game is reportedly in a playable state, Todd Howard himself confirmed that the game is still far from release, joking that he has never heard of the game, and a new report from known Xbox insider Jez Corden suggests that this is indeed the case, as the next entry in the series is likely to debut close to 20 years after its predecessor, Skyrim.
"I've heard that like, I don't know how true this is, but one thing I heard is Fallout remasters are probably a little bit further off than people think and Elder Scrolls VI is still quite far away," Corden said during the latest episode of the Xbox Two podcast, commenting on recent statements from Xbox's Matthew Ball regarding reviving some classic franchises strongly attached to the brand. "I suppose that getting some of those games out more quickly is probably something they're probably very thinking is top of mind for them."
As for when The Elder Scrolls VI and the Fallout remake or remasters will launch, we shouldn't expect any to come this year. "2027 maybe for Fallout remake, at least one of them, and then probably the year after or the year after that for Elder Scrolls," said Corden. Considering we learned about the Fallout 3 remaster at the same time we learned about Oblivion Remastered, which launched last year, it is likely the third entry in the series will be the first game to launch on current consoles ahead of every other game in the works at Bethesda.
No matter when the game is coming out, The Elder Scrolls VI is in a "no-win" situation, according to former Bethesda Lead Artist Nate Purkeypile. "How do you beat that? I hope it’s a great game, but even if it’s just as good as Skyrim was, you’ll still get so many people throwing out hateful comments. I’m sure there will be more death threats again. All of that stuff. It’s really unfortunate that that’s the way things have gone," Purkeypile said back in January.
Although The Elder Scrolls VI and the Fallout series remakes or remasters are still far from release, Xbox's immediate release schedule is packed with promising titles, including Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable, which is still scheduled for a 2026 release despite rumors of a potential delay to avoid Grand Theft Auto 6. More information on these upcoming games will be revealed during Xbox's annual showcase on June 7.
