Telegram CEO has been arrested

In a thoroughly shocking move, Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, was apprehended by the French authorities outside of the Paris airport shortly after getting off of his private jet. The Chief Executive was arrested due to an ongoing investigation revolving around the messaging platform’s lack of moderation, which allows for complete anonymity but also encourages crimes and other nefarious activities to go unchecked.

French authorities strongly believe that Telegram’s negligence of moderation has allowed criminal activity to go rampant on the app

The incident was first reported by French news outlet TF1, followed by other leading publications such as Reuters. One source having crucial information about Durov’s arrest, likely believes that his lack of cooperation regarding Telegram has allowed for ‘an incalculable number of offenses and crimes to be committed, which he does nothing to moderate nor does he cooperate.’ These activities could potentially result in Durov’s incarceration, but nothing is confirmed as of yet.

Telegram, which has approximately one billion users, has grown in popularity in Ukraine, Russia, and other countries and is regarded as one of the top messaging platforms. One of the biggest perks of the application is that users can avoid any kind of scrutiny thanks to its privacy-focused outlook, which was one of the reasons why Russian residents could access various news sources related to the war against Ukraine after there was increased pressure to mitigate the dissemination of information through official channels.

As reported by Ars Technica, Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, has said that Telegram is also used by Russian forces to communicate, and it allows them to plan their next move in the dark without the opposition obtaining knowledge. Ironically, Durov had left Russia to start work on Telegram after he was forced out of his first company, VKontakte, which is the Russian version of Facebook. With the funds he garnered from this first venture, he left the country and founded the messaging platform.

Telegram has yet to comment on the current incident, but TASS, the Russian News Agency has said that there has been no appeal from Durov’s team to the embassy, but it is attempting to ‘clarify’ the situation.
