T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert steps down after 5+ years, Srini Gopalan set to lead from November.

T-Mobile has managed to stay in the news for quite some time for pivoting in a new direction and pushing for a self-reliant model through the adoption of its T-Life app. It's also changed some of its loyalty programs, which led to a lot of backlash. Now, another leadership transition signals a change in the direction of the carrier as Mike Sievert, after serving the company for almost five years and seven months, is now stepping down from his role (via Reuters).

Leadership shift at T-Mobile as Mike Sievert steps down and Srini Gopalan takes over

T-Mobile is determined to change not only its structure and programs but also its leadership, indicating that more transitions and fresh strategies might be underway. On November 1, 2025, Srini Gopalan, who is serving as the Chief Operating Officer, will take over the role of CEO and replace Mike Sievert, who has served in that capacity for more than five years. Sievert will remain closely involved in the long-term strategy and other key areas and will continue as Vice Chairman.

The transition is said to be a well-established succession strategy by both Sievert and T-Mobile's board to aggressively push into the company's forward plans, especially considering how Gopalan has been the company's COO since March 2025 and has been working alongside Sievert in driving the carrier through major growth periods. Prior to this, Gopalan served in leadership roles at several key companies that were focused on scaling fiber networks and expanding market share in competitive environments.

Let's look at the growth that the company has experienced during Mike Sievert's tenure since 2020. It has been massive, as T-Mobile expanded its broadband, built its 5G network, and even underwent acquisitions that helped significantly boost the company's value. It would not be an overstatement to say that the carrier ended up being recognized as one of the top telecom forces during this period.

While leadership changes at large telecom companies like T-Mobile often pose risks, with some internal members and stakeholders being unsure of the change, Gopalan taking over might be the push that T-Mobile needs in times when competition and customer expectations are high. It could help steer the company in the right direction for growth. This move does not just represent a simple change in leadership but could entirely reshape the future of mobile and broadband service in the coming years across the U.S.
