T-Mobile is heavily invested in its T-Life app, aiming to make users' lives a lot simpler, and amid heavy marketing, some people do not like it at all. Well, now users have another reason to play keep-away from the T-Life app, as T-Mobile is silently screen recording on the iPhone when they use the app. The strange thing about the whole ordeal is that the company made the change without any kind of notice. The company claims that it is safe and solely records activity within its app.
T-Mobile records activity within its T-Life app without user permission, claiming it helps to troubleshoot
As mentioned, T-Mobile claims that its T-Life app only records contents within the app and also does not record notifications that pop up on top of the interface. However, we can argue that even if it is recording contents within the app, it is still screening your personal information like capturing payment information, device tracking, and operations regarding smart home integration.
Users have shared their despair, and as per CNET, T-Mobile has responded to the negative feedback regarding personal information recording. The most the carrier could say was that the unannounced feature was for their own good. T-Mobile's spokesperson states:
"To help us give customers who use T-Life a smoother experience, we are rolling out a new tool in the app that will help us quickly troubleshoot reported or detected issues."
"This tool records activities within the app only and does not see or access any personal information."
Basically, what the spokesperson says is that if users do not like the feature, they can turn it off. Since the company did not officially announce the feature, there is no way for the average user to find out if it is enabled. The T-Life app also happens to have a Screen Share feature for the support staff, and the company claims that this is what the feature is for. However, Screen Share is off by default, unlike the screen recording feature. To turn off the screen recording tool, this is what you have to do:
Step 1: Launch the T-Mobile app
Step 2: Select Manage
Step 3: Tap on the Settings icon
Step 4: Select Preferences
Step 5: Turn off screen recording tool
T-Mobile has been hacked plenty of times in the past, where the data of millions of users was exposed. With the carrier's reported mishaps in the past, the screen recording feature is quite questionable and could give room to a major leak. T-Mobile is consistently promoting its T-Life app, and the more people download it, the more the company's staff is paid. The Street previously reported that the team is given a $10 bonus for each person they convince to install the app, and not meeting specific download targets would only create problems for them. Do you think T-Mobile should revert the changes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
