Windows has always had an inherent problem that was prevalent even with the latest version and was not addressed by Microsoft. For those wondering, it is the slow and steady battery drain when a laptop runs on standby power. While the lack of software improvements can be blamed, the inefficiency of previous-generation chipsets was also a factor.
Thankfully, Microsoft has managed to address both issues with the Surface Laptop 7, which runs Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon X Elite. One owner describes the notebook as having exceptional standby battery timing, as even with the lid closed, the device can run for hours without dropping a single percentage point.
The Surface Laptop 7 did not lose a single percentage point even when the lid was closed for 10 hours
Typically, when a Windows notebook’s lid is closed, it automatically goes into a sleep state, which is an extremely low-power mode that consumes very little battery, with the machine resorting to its previous state when that lid is opened. The problem is that the feature does not work as intended, with countless users on Reddit and other forums incessantly complaining that Microsoft has done little to counter the problem. Others have simply chosen to put their laptops to ‘Hibernate,’ but with the Surface Laptop 7, this issue might never have to pop up again.
Parker Burton demonstrated the impressive capability of the Surface Laptop 7 and the efficiency of the Snapdragon X Elite that even with the lid closed for 10 hours, there was not a single battery percentage drop. This indicates that either Microsoft has successfully tackled the standby power problem, or the superior power efficiency of the Snapdragon X Elite means that even with the issue yet to be addressed, it will not cause problems to those who own the Surface Laptop 7.

It is unclear if the same standby time is witnessed on other laptops running the Snapdragon X Elite, so we will have to wait for more information to come through. Hopefully, this will be the end of users continuously complaining about battery drain on their laptops, but what x86-powered machines? It appears that we have lots to learn on that end, so stay tuned.
