Today, Sony has decided to go ahead with the launch of the Xperia 1 VI, continuing its tradition of launching yearly flagship phones. This year's Xperia does not bring a lot of new stuff to the table but still gives you Sony's tried and tested formula, which should be more than enough for loyalists.
The Sony Xperia 1 VI is a flagship geared towards photographers and videographers, with a lot of great features for everyone
One of the things Sony has lined up is the design. The Xperia 1 VI looks a lot like its predecessors, and I do enjoy that. I mean, the phone reminds me of my beloved Xperia Z2, which, at one point, was my favorite device. Sony has changed the aspect ratio slightly, and the new phone sports a 19.5:9 aspect ratio instead of the 21:9 that we have been seeing for some time.
A rather odd change that comes with the display of the Xperia 1 VI is the fact that Sony is going for an FHD+ display on this flagship instead of the 4K display that the company had been offering for some time. The company finally realized that having a 4K display was not conducive for a smartphone. Although the display resolution might come as a huge downgrade, you still get all the tech that Sony is known for, and the display is also 50% brighter than the one we saw last year. Of course, you also get an LTPO OLED panel that can go from 1Hz to 120Hz. Needless to say, Sony's got you covered.
We all know Sony is great at cameras, and the Xperia 1 VI is no different. The phone comes with three cameras on the back: a 16mm ultrawide sensor, a 24mm main camera, and an 85-170mm variable zoom telephoto camera. The primary camera houses a 48-megapixel sensor, and Sony has also ensured that the telephoto zoom camera offers zoom magnification from 3.5x to 7.1x.
A really interesting thing is that Sony has decided to keep the Xperia 1 VI largely AI-free. However, there is AI tech found in the camera, where the cameras will leverage artificial intelligence processing that will help bring pictures to live. Sony says that AI will help deliver pictures that will look like they are taken using a full-frame camera. If you have used a full-frame camera, you can tell how good the pictures look, and I am really looking forward to seeing how Sony's claims are put to the test.
Cameras aside, everything else about the Xperia 1 VI also screams flagship. You get the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, 12 gigs of RAM, and two storage options. If the 256/512GB storage is not enough for you, a microSD card slot will allow you to expand the storage up to 1.5 TB. The phone is powered by a 5,000 mAh battery, as well as Qi wireless charging and battery sharing. You even get a 3.5mm audio jack, which goes to show that Sony understands what users are looking for.
If you want to get your hands on the Xperia 1 VI, you will have to wait until June. The phone is available for pre-order starting today for a whopping £1299/€1399. The company did not reveal the pricing in the U.S., but you should not expect any less because that is what Sony phones tend to go for.
