A few Android flagship smartphones are in the prototype phase, where manufacturers are not just testing their devices with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, but also putting these handsets through their paces with a number of specifications. Currently, a tipster claims that the top-end hardware includes 16GB of LPDDR6 RAM and 1TB of UFS 5.0 storage, which is one of the best configurations you can have in a premium Android smartphone, but there’s a huge catch: these models won’t ship with the latest and greatest in camera image quality.
One tipster says that devices shipping with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro will offer a ‘core experience’ boost to users, despite the imaging trade-offs
On Weibo, Digital Chat Station has returned with some more tidbits surrounding the specifications of future devices kitted with Qualcomm’s first 2nm SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. Only yesterday, we reported that the 16GB LPDDR5X RAM paired with 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage has exceeded the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’s price, which was previously estimated at $280 apiece. Naturally, this means that smartphones with LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage will be pricier, forcing manufacturers to bring some trade-offs.
The tipster states that one area where compromises will be made is in the camera’s image quality. Fortunately, before readers jump to conclusions that top-tier flagships will sport inferior sensor technology, Digital Chat Station clarifies that future smartphones will likely deliver capabilities equivalent to or below the standard version’s. Unfortunately, while this is still a downgrade, he states that the core experience will still be significantly improved.
What’s interesting about Digital Chat Station’s statement is that companies like Samsung, Apple, Google, and others are known for reusing the same camera hardware across multiple generations. This approach is followed for obvious reasons: saving millions by repurposing older parts while focusing more on computational improvements in image and video capture, so even if cutting-edge optics aren’t used for Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro flagships, that doesn’t mean companies cannot resort to software tweaks.
It is possible that the tipster meant that smartphone makers won’t invest unnecessary capital in computational photography, since introducing annual upgrades in this segment requires a certain level of investment. The rumor also mentions that these compromises will be made due to the increase in the SoC, memory, and display prices. Thankfully, Qualcomm is said to offer its partners flexibility by letting them configure the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro with older LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage to retain healthier margins.
