The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Despite having been released over ten years ago, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim continues to be among the most popular games still played to this day. Still, a modern remake taking advantage of the latest technology would be rather welcome, as highlighted by a new video shared online this week.

This new video, shared on YouTube by Leo Torres, is another installment of an ongoing project to visualize Tamriel's cities more realistically and with lore-accurate scale showing a recreation of Skyrim's capital, Solitude, with sixteen times the detail. The city was rendered using Unreal Engine 5.3.1 using a mix of third-party models, and custom assets modelled in Blender and textured in Mixer. Nanite was used for models and foliage while Lumen was used for global illumination and reflections, and the results, needless to say, are stunning, despite such a huge city not being exactly practical gameplay-wise.

While this The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim recreation is only one of the many independent projects using Unreal Engine 5, more and more games powered by the engine are getting released as time passes. The latest is the soulslike Lords of the Fallen, a game that looks quite good but that doesn't play just as well, as I highlighted in my review.

Lords of the Fallen boasts impressive visuals and an interesting story for a soulslike, but unfortunately, that's where the praise ends. Despite functional gameplay and a well-designed world, the experience is marred by frustrating combat mechanics, subpar enemy placement, and an overall lack of polish, making it one of the most frustrating soulslikes ever released.
