LPDDR6 RAM production is an area where CXMT has to aggressively cover up for lost ground, and that’s where SK hynix aims to flex its dominance over its memory rival. According to the latest report, the Korean manufacturer aims to begin the mass production and shipment of the next-generation memory standard in H2 2026, with one of its first customers being of Chinese origin.
Xiaomi is said to be treated to SK hynix’s first LPDDR6 RAM shipment, with adoption for the SOCAMM form factor expected for AI servers
The report from Herald Corp states that Xiaomi will be SK hynix’s first customer of LPDDR6 memory that’s fabricated on the sixth-generation 10nm-class process (1c), which not only brings improved data throughput but also increased efficiency over the previous-generation standard. SK hynix will maintain pace with Samsung and Micron by targeting double the capacity for AI datacenters with 512GB kits per module to tackle rising Agentic AI demand.
As for CXMT, its supply chain is currently gearing up for a transition that’ll allow for DDR6 production to smooth out, but given that this stage isn’t slated to arrive for a couple of years, this technological gap gives SK hynix the perfect opportunity to race to the market to capture Chinese customers, starting with Xiaomi. The report goes into further detail, stating that the deal with the smartphone manufacturer will pave the way for more local brands like OPPO and Vivo to enter the fold, cutting off CXMT.
Seeing as how Huawei’s engineers were treated at the hands of CXMT, despite the former commanding the highest number of memory orders and holding the largest position in the Chinese smartphone market for volume shipments, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo might fear the same fate crossing their paths, forcing them to cement their relationships with overseas memory manufacturers before it's too late.
While we don’t expect SK hynix to offer Chinese brands any form of preferential advantage, such as low LPDDR6 RAM pricing, we can hope that these entities will form a deal that enables companies like Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo to receive timely memory shipments, removing unnecessary worrying over supply shortages.
At the same time, SK hynix is prepping to bring its LPDDR6 memory to the SOCAMM standard for AI datacenters, as it results in increased AI inference. We’ve previously discussed that AI customers have been requesting more and more LPDDR5X SOCAMM memory, pushing Apple into a corner, as this standard consumes substantially lower power than DDR5 while delivering increased bandwidth and requiring less cooling when used in compact server racks.
