Samsung and Sony are the two kings of smartphone camera sensors, equipping not just their phones but almost every other phone in the market with excellent sensors. However, their strategy is a bit different. The South Korean firm focuses largely on sensors with a high resolution, while Sony is more focused on physically larger camera sensors, going as high as 1 inch.
The new Samsung ISOCELL cameras could deliver groundbreaking camera performance once they debut
However, a new report suggests that Samsung appears to be working on two ISOCELL camera sensors. These senses are called ISOCELL HW1 and ISOCELL HW2, and if you look back at the naming scheme, you will realize that these will be entirely new sensors.

Both sensors provide the same insane resolution of 432 megapixels, but there are some differences. For instance, the ISOCELL HW1 has a 1/1.05-inch sensor with 0.56µm pixels, and the HW2 offers a 1/1.07-inch sensor with 0.5µm pixels. Now, I do understand that these sensors are not exactly 1-inch, but they are very close to that and, therefore, will be marketed as 1-inch sensors.
Sadly, the source has not given any information on the phones that will be using these Samsung sensors. The tip does claim that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will use the same sensor as the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, on the other hand, will shift to a 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP5 camera with a 1/1.3-inch sensor size and 0.5µm pixels.
I am honestly really glad that Samsung is finally stepping up and releasing larger sensors, and combined with a high megapixel count, we apparently have success at hand. However, it seems that we are going to have to wait and see when these sensors come out and which phones use them first. I doubt we will see the Galaxy S24 series bringing these sensors to the consumers, but I look forward to seeing what more Samsung has in store for us.
