Samsung is making OLED panels for the 2026 MacBook Pro

Apple will finally upgrade from mini-LED to OLED with its new MacBook Pro model, which is estimated to arrive in 2026. Where the company has its trusted display manufacturers, Samsung and LG, to provide it with heaps of panel shipments for a variety of products, the latest report mentions that only the larger South Korean firm will fulfill shipments for the portable Mac. Additionally, we have learned that Apple could finally ditch the notch on the OLED MacBook Pro just like it did with its iPhones, shifting to a pill-shaped cutout that the company refers to as the Dynamic Island.

Massive investment from Samsung is being poured into its 8.6-generation OLED production facility to help speed up the display upgrade expected on the newer MacBook Pro

The exact investment amount was not mentioned by Korean media outlet Dealsite, but the details state that Samsung ended up becoming Apple’s sole supplier for the MacBook Pro OLED because of its continued commitment to investing funds in its 8.6-generation production line. Based on the report, Apple requires oxide thin-film transistor technology (TFT) in its machines, which Samsung aims to provide, with the latter estimated to mass produce 15,000 units per month on glass substrates.

The advantage of TFT technology is that it consumes less power, giving OLED MacBook Pro models improved efficiency, especially on higher brightness levels. With Samsung’s current production capabilities, it can churn out 10 million panels annually, though industry estimates state that OLED MacBook Pro shipments will be around 5 million units. Apple will likely retain the ProMotion branding when highlighting the MacBook Pro’s features to the audience, meaning that the new hardware will likely feature LTPO panels, with the refresh rate being in the 10Hz-120Hz range to conserve battery life.

Thankfully, Apple is reported to finally ditch the notch for the OLED MacBook Pro as it shifts to the Dynamic Island approach. With Samsung becoming Apple’s exclusive supplier, its advantage will not stay active for long because LG is reportedly committed to setting up its own 8.6-generation OLED production facility, with BOE also potentially becoming the third supplier in the distant future.
