We recently reported that Galaxy AI, the artificial intelligence driving the Galaxy S24 series, could usher into the paid era after the end of 2025. At that time, I was not sure how most users were going to take it or whether Samsung would revert its decision or not, but more information has surfaced indicating Samsung's seriousness. There is still some silver lining that we are going to talk about.
Samsung could start charging for Galaxy AI, but the whole process is still in the decision-making phase
T.M. Roh, the mobile business head at Samsung, has dropped a hint that Galaxy AI features are going to be paid for at some point after 2025. Roh also talked about how there will be some additional features that will be exclusive to paying consumers. This means that Samsung will leave some features available to everyone for free.
In an interview, Roh confirmed that Galaxy AI is free for everyone to use until the end of 2025. However, the company might start charging for its services after that. It is also worth noting that Samsung has not made up its mind regarding the future of its AI services, and Roh has even gone on record and talked about how all of this is still in the decision-making phase, which does indicate that the plan to charge for AI features could ultimately change.
"According to our analysis, there are various needs for mobile AI," Roh said to ET Telecom. "So, there will be consumers who will be satisfied with using the AI capabilities for free."
Roh even talked about how Samsung might introduce more powerful and fleshed-out AI features for users who are willing to spend money on the features. This could make the Galaxy AI a paid service, and it would make sense to introduce various tiers at this point.
"Then there could also be customers who wish for even more powerful AI capabilities and even pay for them," he mentioned. "So, in the future decision-making, we will take all these factors into consideration."
Whatever decision Samsung takes with Galaxy AI's future is in its own hands. However, one can't overlook the fact that AI is here to stay. Samsung is invested in it, and so is Google, and we will see more big players jumping on the bandwagon as well. I believe a time when smartphones are actually becoming smart in terms of how they work. Whether Samsung chooses to charge for its services is something that we are going to have to wait and see, but we are going to keep you posted should more information come to light.
