Samsung Electronics has gone with Team Red and purchased $20 Million worth of AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs for its AI requirements.

Samsung Electronics spends $20M on the AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs to make progress in AI development

Samsung Electronics has recently started testing newly bought AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs. The company has commenced its AI development journey with the MI300X data center GPUs, which it states are more affordable than the data center offerings from NVIDIA.

Similar to most giants, Samsung Electronics is also working on developing its own AI and needs serious horsepower to power its systems. While companies like Meta and xAI went with NVIDIA H100 GPUs, Samsung is going through a more affordable route. Compared to NVIDIA's H100, which sells for $30000-$40000, the AMD MI300X costs several times less. The GPU, despite lacking behind NVIDIA's Hopper lineup in AI workloads, has been seen as a good alternative in terms of its pricing.

The AMD MI300X is said to have cost Samsung roughly $10000 per piece and is currently the flagship model from AMD in the Instinct family, released at the end of 2023. It brings 19456 Stream Processors, 304 Compute Units, and 192 GB HBM3(High Bandwidth Memor) memory for intensive workloads. More on the chip here. The GPU is hence, a much cost-effective solution for large-scale projects. An official in the semiconductor industry said,

The MI300X was evaluated as having relatively inferior performance compared to the H100, but we know that Samsung Electronics has shown interest in it after it recently showed performance comparable to the H100 in AMD's own tests.

The GPUs have been sent to Samsung Research for testing, which is the leading institute in the DX division. The GPUs aren't yet tested at their limits but as per an insider working at Samsung, it will take a bit more time for AI development to enter the full swing state.

It should be kept in mind that Samsung itself ships its HBM memory to AMD for its Instinct GPU lineup and has also recently got its HBM3E memory passed the quality checks for NVIDIA GPUs. It's expected that Samsung will keep purchasing GPUs from AMD in the future and according to an official, the ties between the two companies are expected to be strengthened more.
