During yesterday's Future Games Show Spring Showcase, independent developer Elos Games And Arts and publisher GameDev.ist have revealed that their single player fantasy action RPG Sagas of Lumin will launch on Steam Early Access in Summer 2026.
According to the developers, it features a semi-open world environment that players can roam freely on foot or on dragonback, thanks to a fully physics-driven dragonflight system. They can also switch seamlessly between fighting on their bonded dragon and in close-quarter combat, whether with melee weapons, ranged weapons (including firearms, as there are also some steampunk elements), or elemental spells. The dragon remains an independent ally in the sky while the player fights on foot, and there are also cool feats like leaping off cliffs and being caught mid-fall by the dragon.
Dragonback battles include firebreaths, but also unleashing your dragon's claws and delivering crushing tackles and savage bites, as well as grabbing and throwing environmental objects and explosives mid-air. Players will challenge rival dragons, lay waste to enemy bases, and clash with powerful airships, all while carefully evading the deadly attacks coming their way. There is a dedicated skill tree for both the player character and their dragon, alongside crafting systems, armor sets with gender-specific appearances, and a broad weapon variety with distinct combat animations for each type.
Eventually, it will be possible to find, tame, and bond different dragons. While exploring the game, players will also discover flying ships, which can serve as mobile upgradeable hubs that can be staffed with companions recruited throughout the journey. The narrative is said to be choice-driven, with player decisions shaping both the story and the environment.
In Sagas of Lumin, players take on the role of a male or female Drair Ketra, a dragon rider ascending through the ranks of the ancient Drair cult during a period of profound upheaval caused by the clash between the cult's magical traditions and the rising tide of steam-powered technology, which empowers ordinary people at the expense of the Drairs' long-held authority. The development team described the world as morally complex, deliberately avoiding clear good-versus-evil framings. Every faction and character follows its own beliefs and interests.
The world of Lumin blends steampunk, medieval, and gothic aesthetics across 15 distinct cultures connected by dragons, airships, and magical vessels. Islands range from continent-sized landmasses to smaller outposts, each with diverse biomes, and nations maintain their own languages, cultures, and architectural traditions. Cities, towns, and villages are scattered throughout, and while dragons are central to both travel and warfare, other rare creatures also exist as anomalies.
An updated demo of Sagas of Lumin can be downloaded for free via Steam, featuring a mission taken from later in the game alongside a tutorial map. Save files will not carry over to the full release. The current goal is to keep Sagas of Lumin in early access for a year, so version 1.0 might be released in Summer 2027.
Older gamers might be reminded of a game called Drakan: Order of the Flame, launched in 1999 by Surreal Software, which also featured aerial dragon fights as well as ground-level combat. Beyond the sequel, 2002's Drakan: The Ancients' Gates, there haven't been many games that deliver this specific power fantasy, which is among the most iconic in classic fantasy settings. Hopefully, this indie team can successfully cover this niche.
