The ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X handheld PCs just got a major update that addresses several elements of the experience that those who bought into the expensive new handhelds have gotten used to. When I reviewed the ROG Xbox Ally X at launch, one of the chief issues with it was how it lacked any kind of plug-and-play experience, and each update, including today's, has been another step towards giving it that console-quality convenience.
The most significant parts of today's update are meant to make the experience as seamless as possible, particularly when you're docking the device to play it on a larger monitor or TV. Like how playing in Docked Mode will now automatically default to your TV's resolution, instead of having to go in and adjust it yourself.
Or how playing in Docked Mode will automatically activate several features built into modern TVs from Samsung, LG, and Vizio, like Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Auto Game Mode on Samsung TVs, and Game/PC Mode on Vizio displays.
It's also now easier to pair an Xbox or Designed for Xbox controller when using the ROG Xbox Ally in Docked Mode, and the new Gamepad Cursor feature makes it easier to continue using the device's built-in gamepad controls in apps that don't natively support them. Essentially, a big element of today's update is making the Docked Mode experience far, far more seamless than it has been.
The other major element of today's update is the introduction of Auto Super Resolution (AutoSR) to the handheld devices. So far, it's available to Xbox Insider users on the ROG Xbox Ally/Ally X while in Docked Mode, and for games that already have some kind of super resolution feature supported, it'll stack on top of that enhancement for an even better picture.
You'll be able to test out AutoSR on several titles, including Assassin's Creed Mirage, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Forza Horizon 5, Control, DOOM: The Dark Ages, The Outer Worlds 2, Tom Clancy's The Division 2, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, and more.
Other major improvements include a fix that's coming to how you can organize your games library on the ROG Xbox Ally, so players can "add, remove, edit, and launch any installed game or app directly from the Xbox experience." That'll arrive in an update set for later this month.
