NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition 12 GB Graphics Card Review – Supercharged AD104 GPU

Conclusion - 4070 SUPER Is A Great Start For 2024 For Gamers!

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER launches at $599 US which retains its high-end positioning but comes with a lot of changes for the underlying GPU. From the performance that we have just gathered, it looks like the 4070 SUPER is a very well and competitively priced solution so let's talk of the things I liked about this graphics card and some of the improvements that NVIDIA could have considered.

Faster Than A RX 7800 XT In Rasterized Games

NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER reclaims one of the areas where the RTX 4070 lacked a lot and that was the rasterized gaming segment. The vast majority of games out there still rely on standard rasterized approaches and while the adoption of ray tracing saw a magnitude of growth in the past year, you can't deny that rasterization is still the way to go for most gamers. The RTX 4070 Non SUPER was a fast card but the Radeon RX 7800 XT was faster in all rasterized titles. With the RTX 4070 SUPER, NVIDIA gains a 14% advantage at 1080p, 13% advantage at 1440p, and 11% advantage at 2160p versus the RX 7800 XT.

And Much Faster In RT Games, Plus You Get DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction

There's no doubt that 2024 is going to be another great year for ray traced games and NVIDIA has already proven with its third-generation RT architecture that it is the king of the hill. The NVIDIA RTX 4070 was easily surpassing the RX 7800 XT and in some cases, even the 7900 XT in ray-traced titles but with the RTX 4070 SUPER, you are seeing an additional 12-15% bump. This means that if you're slightly under 60 FPS at 1440p with ray tracing, then RTX 4070 SUPER can ensure a playable 60 FPS in those titles. Plus, next-gen games pack DLSS 3.5 ray reconstruction and DLSS/DLAA technologies which offer faster FPS and better image quality than ever before.

Ray tracing has come a long way, from the time that 30-60 FPS were the target to the now 60/100 FPS+ frame rates that can be achieved using AI upscaling technologies such as DLSS 3. The NVIDIA RTX 4070 SUPER leads the way, delivering some fantastic performance in ray-traced titles & often comes close to the RTX 4070 Ti.

Those Power Numbers Can't Be Right Because They Are That Good!

Like with the past Ada Lovelace GPUs, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER impresses with even more performance per watt. We hardly saw the power increase in the double digits (Watts) mark over the RTX 4070 delivering an average 15% improvement. In some specific cases, the power can hit close to the peak 220W TGP and that's using RT-intensive graphics settings but besides that, the Ada architecture retains the title of being the most efficient GPU design we have seen in recent years.

NVIDIA Founders Edition: Same Cooler With Black Aesthetics Being The Cherry on Top

NVIDIA's Founders Edition GPUs are some of the most well-designed reference coolers and the company doesn't make a lot of changes besides the aesthetics which are now an all-black matte design with a darker black frame with a reflective surface. The cooler still offers sub-60C temps in gaming loads and runs real quiet. You also get slight LEDs running on the card which is a great touch.

16 GB For AI & $549 US Price Would've Been Insanely Competitive

The RTX 4070 SUPER is just a pinch away from greatness. I think this card would've been a nice fit with 16 GB memory to match the RX 7800 XT. The 7800 XT's 16 GB memory is still something that can be seen as a positive aspect for certain buyers and given all the hype that NVIDIA has built up around AI, a large memory pool would have been great for content generation and AI-based large language models for those who want to use the SUPER graphics card besides just gaming reasons.

The other thing is the pricing, replacing the RTX 4070 at the same price of $599 and offering higher performance is awesome but I think simply replacing the RTX 4070 overall at $549 would've been much better and would've left no reason to get the 7800 XT. I think that $549 US is the long-term goal for the 4070 SUPER. You see, the 4070 Non-SUPER has a larger inventory compared to the 4070 Ti and 4080 Non-SUPER cards. These cards need to be sold for the inventories to reach a dead-level which would mark the beginning of the first price cuts/discounts for the 4070 SUPER. Surely, we can expect the card to hit the $549 US once that happens but even at $599 US, the RTX 4070 SUPER is a mighty good card.

Conclusion - Well-Deserving of The SUPER Title

Both AMD and NVIDIA have had good and bad cards throughout 2022 and 2023. While the RTX 4070 wasn't that bad of a card, the launch of the RX 7800 XT did make it look weaker with strong rasterized performance and a 16 GB VRAM. Now, NVIDIA is taking back the lead in this segment by offering the RTX 4070 SUPER, a well-positioned and strong first outing of the SUPER series.

The RTX 4070 easily stands tall against the RX 7800 XT, offering faster rasterized, ray tracing & DLSS performance while being outfitted with an extremely efficient GPU that's cooled by a jaw-droppingly good Founders Edition design. This is the right time to upgrade and SUPER RTX 40 GPUs give you a lot of reason to go for team green this time around!
