MSI MPG Ai1600TS 80+ Titanium PSU Specifications

The MSI MPG Power Supplies are high-end offerings from the manufacturer and include 650W and up to 1600W designs. There are several features that these PSUs rock besides the ATX 3.1 and PCIe Gen 5.1 standards. First and foremost, we have to talk about the rated power output.

The MSI MPG Ai1600TS offers 1600W of power. The MPG Ai1600TS offers 1600W of sustained power through its +12V rails at 133.33A. Its voltage is rated between 115-240V (50~60Hz) at 1600W and 100-115V at the 1200W mode. Now the most interesting part about both of these PSUs, besides the ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 compliance, is the GPU Safeguard+ technology, which is designed to protect graphics cards against unwanted damage.

The other most important thing to note here is that this PSU is fully PCIe Gen 5.1 & ATX 3.1 compliant, which means it comes with both a proper PCIe Gen 5.1 connector on the PSU unit and also comes with necessary PCIe Gen 5.1 cables. MSI bundles the MPG PSU series with a 16-pin to 16-pin connector cable (up to 600W). All of these cables are compliant with the PCIe 12V-2x6 standard.

Some protection features that you get on the MSI MPG Ai1600TS PSU include:

As for the design of the PSU unit, it comes in an ATX form factor and measures 150 x 190 x 86 mm. The cooling is provided by a top-mounted 135mm FDB fan. The PSU also comes with a Software Sync port that can be connected to a USB interface for real-time monitoring within the MSI Center application. MSI ships the MPG Ai1600TS with a 10-year warranty and is priced around $500 US.

The unit we received comes in a large package with the MPG "Gaming" aesthetics, plus a picture of the PSU on the front wrap. The front also lists down several features such as its 80 Plus Titanium Rating, the ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 design, G.I. (Gaming Intelligence) support, SiC caps, and GPU Safeguard+ tech.

The back of the box highlights some main features of the PSU, such as GPU Safeguard+, Dual Native 12V-2x6 connectors, SiC MOSFETs, Dual Colored 12V-2x6 cables, Fan Safeguard tech, Embossed Jacket cables, & 80 Plus Titanium Efficiency. The specs and connectors are also labeled on the back.

The unit is held within foam packaging, which is great for durability, and there's a safety manual that tells you how to install the PSU inside your PC and how to connect the 12V-2x6 connector, either using adapters or directly to the GPU.

The PSU and accessories are packaged in a nice fiber cloth casing.

Following is our first look at the PSU itself, which looks very premium with the various black and pink accents.

On the back, you can see the power plug, the power switch, and a large mesh panel that acts as an exhaust vent.

Now, depending on how you use the PSU, the bottom panel reads the specifications and power ratings. The PSU is rated to output a maximum of 133.33A and 1600W through the 12V rails.

The sides of the PSU have nice MPG labels and also the MPG logo.

Coming to the connectors, there are two 2 PCIe 12+4 (12V-2x6), eight PCIe 8-pin connectors for CPU and PCIe devices, an ATX 24-pin (14+10 pin) ATX connector, & three 6-pin connectors for peripherals.

The cables within the packaging pouch include the ATX 20+4 pin, two Gen5.1 (12V-2x6) connectors, two EPS 12V 4+4 pin CPU connectors, 7 PCIe 6+2 connectors, 8 SATA connectors, and 4 Peripheral connectors.

Now let's talk about some of the components within the MPG PSU. To start, MSI is using server-grade electrolytic capacitors, which are rated for up to 105 °C temperatures, a fully digital MCU, SiC PFC MOSFETs, a server-grade transformer that utilizes flat spring coils for smaller volume & higher efficiency, and enlarged heatsinks for better heat dissipation.

The PSU comes with a dual-tone 12V-2x6 power connector, which helps ensure that it is connected properly to the PSU and the GPU. If the yellow color is visible, it means that the connector isn't fully plugged in. There are two of these dual-tone cables added within the package, so you can boot up to two RTX 5090 GPUs on this PSU if you want to.

MSI MPG Ai1600TS 80+ Titanium PSU Final Impressions

MSI was among the first to support the next-gen ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0 standards when they were first announced, even before the release of the RTX 40 series. With the RTX 50 series from NVIDIA, these newer standards become even more crucial to ensure safety and stable power delivery in gaming PCs.

So continuing on its ATX 3.1/PCIe 5.1 journey, MSI's latest addition is the AI "TS" series in its MPG family. These are E-ATX offerings that offer up to 1600W of power, come with the latest set of features, and enhanced protection against all sorts of power-related issues. One of the best returning features is the dual-color 12V-2x6 connector, which is not only upgraded to the newest standard but retains the same clever decision to color-code the cables to allow users to ensure proper connectivity.

But the biggest feature to talk about today is GPU Safeguard+, which is specifically designed to alert users and prevent any unwanted graphics card damage that can be caused by irregular 16-pin connectors.

The GPU Safeguard+ features are available through MSI Center, MSI Afterburner, and HWiNFO. With Afterburner, the new safety algorithm intelligently detects abnormal 16-pin operation & can limit the power down to 75% across all RTX 50 GPUs, not just the flagship RTX 5090s, using the same connector.

For example, if a user is running an RTX 5090, which has a default TDP of 575W and an abnormal connection is detected, the power limit will be scaled down to 75% or 430W. The application will also showcase a prompt to the user suggesting to check the connection, and if the problem persists, change the cable with a newer one.

Similarly, HWINFO's latest BETA now shows the current of each 12V-2x6 (16-Pin) on MSI's MPG and MEG AI PSUs. The monitoring application also supports abnormal current alerts, similar to Afterburner.

Another important feature highlighted is the built-in buzzer, which will continue to beep for the first three minutes of detecting an anomaly. Users can also set up the alarm within Afterburner and HWINFO that shows a pop-up warning, and changes the status of the 12V-2x6 connector so that users know that something isn't right.

The Safeguard+ feature also adds forced protection, which, after the 3-minute alert, will show a black screen with the buzzer continuing to beep. The following is the full operation cycle of the Safeguard+ feature:

This active protection mechanism relies on our newest PSUs detecting anomalies (fault) on their end by constantly monitoring for potential problems. For example, if it detects too much current sent down a single pin or excessive power spikes that last more than a few milliseconds.

Once these anomalies trigger the safety mechanism, you’ll immediately hear beeps – alerting you to the issue.

This is Phase 1 of the protection.

For our MPG Power Supplies with GPU Safeguard+, you’ll hear the beeps and also see a pop-up warning from MSI Center that alerts you to this issue. This beeping will continue for up to 3 minutes, giving you enough time to save your work.

At this point, you should cut power immediately or force a shutdown by holding down your case power button for 5 seconds.

Now, if you aren’t around when this safety triggers, the Power Supply will intervene to prevent hardware damage once those 3 minutes pass and force a black screen, while continuing the beeping.

For our MAG Power Supplies with GPU Safeguard, this phase remains identical – the buzzer will continue beeping and the screen will go black – forcing you to shutdown and reseat the cable.

With these features, MSI is safeguarding one of the most vital and most expensive components within your PC, the GPU. It's great to see such features being implemented in light of various reports of 16-pin connectors damaging or burning GPUs. This makes quality PSUs like the MPG AI1600TS an ideal choice for RTX 5090 users, and those who are planning to upgrade to future high-end GPUs, as 16-pin is here to stay, but with 1600W and GPU Safeguard+, MSI ensures high wattage output with good protection mechanisms.
