AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D 4.5 GHz “3D V-Cache” CPU Review: The Budget X3D Champ For AM5

Conclusion - More X3D Options For AM5 Builders

The AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D is another solid option within the AM5 lineup. The CPU is a fast gaming chip and features superb efficiency.

In terms of gaming performance, the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D outpaces the newly launched Zen 5 offerings such as the Ryzen 5 9600X, Ryzen 7 9700X, and even the higher-end Ryzen 9 options in gaming benchmarks. Versus Intel, you are looking at performance that surpasses their flagships.

As for application performance, the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D performs mostly similarly to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D but ends up 5-10% slower than the 7700X (105W) due to a 9000 MHz clock speed regression. The 7700X3D is still a 120W chip, and some of that power needs to be conserved for the 3D V-Cache stack. As a result, you will be at the entry-level of performance, and here, the Intel offerings will feel like a much better option if you plan on doing some multi-threading intensive work besides just gaming.

Power and Temperatures of the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X3D are solid, with the chip hardly ever going above 80W in gaming workloads, which is crazy given that it manages to be about as fast as the i9-14900K while sipping several watts less power. Temperatures aren't crazy and well within the 70-75C range, which is lower than its peak operating limit of 89C, and you don't have to use a high-end AIO to cool this chip as a standard air-cooled will do the job just fine.

In terms of pricing, the $329 US price tag is quite good; it makes the 7700X3D the cheapest 8-core option with 3D V-Cache, and given its performance, which is just 4-5% lower than the 7800X3D, it is a fantastic option for gamers. It offers great gaming performance, superb temperatures & power efficiency, plus, you don't need to change much of your AM5 setup to support this chip.

Pros/Cons of the 7700X3D:

  • +Fantastic Gaming Performance
  • +The cheapest 8-Core 3D V-Cache CPU you can buy right now
  • +Zen 4 maintains Good Efficiency & Temperatures
  • +Features full overclocking support
  • +PBO & Lots of tuning options provide even higher performance
  • +Doesn't require fast DDR5 memory
  • +Compatible With All AM5 Motherboards
  • - Small price difference between 7800X3D and 7700X3D
  • - Major clock speed regression (4.5 GHz)
  • - App performance is lacking

Currently, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is available for $299 at Microcenter, which makes it a better deal, but we expect the 7700X3D to come down in price real soon, which was the case with the 5800X3D. If that happens, PC builders will enjoy even more value from AMD's 3D V-Cache CPU options.
