Housemarque's Saros will leverage the power of the PlayStation 5 Pro and the PSSR 2 upscaler to deliver sharp image quality that's barely distinguishable from native 4K resolution and 60 FPS gameplay, in line with the developer's philosophy of pushing gaming hardware to its limits.
“On PlayStation 5 Pro we also increased our base render resolution, which is the resolution before upscaling. This means on PS5 Pro, you will have an even clearer higher resolution image at 60 fps. While we use dynamic resolution to ensure stable frame rate even in the middle of hectic combat, PS5 Pro always delivers a sharper image in a scene-to-scene comparison,” said Seppo Halonen, Housemarque's technical director on the Official PlayStation Blog.
“Saros on PS5 already looks incredible and runs at rock solid 60fps, but for PS5 Pro we push our graphics even further. Furthermore, there are many small adjustments in reflections and overall quality, ensuring that the increase is not only more pixels, but also the content we render scales up to match.” The only place where Saros switches to 30fps is in cutscenes, where the developer preferred to go with quality over quantity and “render the high quality characters, lighting and postprocessing at peak resolution.”
Besides confirming how PSSR 2 will deliver a sharp image quality in Saros almost indistinguishable from native 4K resolution, today's Official PlayStation Blog post goes over how the studio's 3D audio features have been improved over Returnal, and how the DualSense controller features, such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, have been put to good use to create an immersive experience.
Saros is only one of the titles that natively support PSSR 2, alongside other recent games such as Crimson Desert. Games with PSSR 1.0 implementation can also take advantage of the new version of the upscaler via a system-wide toggle, which won't be updated to support newer versions of the upscaler, according to PS5 system architect Mark Cerny.
