PlayStation Partnering with ESL to Launch PlayStation Tournaments

Today it was announced that PlayStation and ESL are partnering to bring a new feature to the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation Tournaments.

This new feature lets Playstation 4 players to take part in tournaments. The first major tournament that'll debut this feature is NBA 2K17 to ring in the start of the NBA Season.

The Major Tournament starts on October 27 and runs through November 26 with Major Cup rounds taking place every Saturday. The Top 3 winners of the NBA 2K17 Major Tournament will earn themselves some Playstation branded prizes.

Signing up for the Tournament seems easy enough, all you need is the following:

  • A copy of NBA 2K17
  • Playstation Plus membership
  • Link an ESL account (if you don't have one, you'll be asked to create one.)

Once you do this, you'll be automatically notified when it's time to compete in Tournaments tab in the Playstation dashboard (see feature image). For now, Playstation Tournaments only support 1 on 1 matches. Other games expecting to arrive on Tournaments are Mortal Kombat X, WRC 5 and Project Cars. Player feedback is going to determine what new games and modes get consideration for PlayStation Tournaments. Here's hoping that Street Fighter 5 makes it onto the list in the future.

For the moment being Tournaments will only support one-on-one matches, but this may change in the future.

Marcel Menge, Managing Director ESL Technology, spoke about bringing Tournaments to the PlayStation 4:

Our goal is to create an environment for competitive gaming that allows players to focus on playing the games. With Sony we found a fantastic partner that shared our vision and who worked together with us to create the best experience for gamers around the world. We hope the community enjoys what we have come up with and are looking forward to all the feedback they will provide, as this is just the first step in our partnership with Sony.

Now that PlayStation Tournaments is happening, what games are you looking forward to competing in?
