Highly Likely
Despite being the most powerful console on the market, the PlayStation 5 Pro hasn't made a huge splash following its launch in November 2024, as users felt its power was left underutilized and some of its unique features, such as the AI-powered PSSR upscaler, left something to be desired, especially in its first incarnation which failed to deliver significant image quality improvements, often delivering visual glitches instead.
While it remains to be seen if any game launching this year, such as the highly anticipated Marvel's Wolverine, will take full advantage of the system's power, by March, the system is reportedly getting a much-welcome upgrade that promises to deliver significant image quality and performance improvements, and a few surprises.
Earlier this week, Gust_FAN, a reliable Japanese insider who previously correctly revealed the PlayStation 5 Slim redesign and, more recently, the launch of the Hyperpop Collection, shared new information on PSSR 2.0 on X, which we have known to be in development since last year. The user revealed when the new version of the upscaler will launch, how it will improve the performance of certain games, and more, as summarized below:
- Update will be available between January and March.
- Features similar to FSR 4 will be implemented on PS5 Pro.
- Improved image quality and performance.
- Increased frame rates for games that previously sat at 70-80 FPS.
- Higher resolution for classic low-resolution games.
- New debugging tools will also be available for developers.
While most of the new information revealed by the Japanese insider isn't specifically new, the corroboration of the launch window suggests it won't be much longer until we see how games that previously sat at 70-80 FPS will run, and if the new version of the upscaler will bring the system closer to being a proper 4K resolution, 120 FPS machine.
Particularly interesting is also the fact that classic low-resolution games will run at higher resolutions, which could make classic games on the PlayStation Store and more expensive PlayStation Plus subscriptions more enticing.
