Google has been showing its commitment to the Pixel Watch, which is evident in the way the company is doing year-on-year improvements. Now, some newly surfaced information suggests that Google is adding new functionality to the upcoming Pixel Watch 3.
Pixel Watch 3 could become a lot more useful with UWB connectivity
Based on some information found by 9to5Google, it appears that the new Play Services app has references of "UWB ranging" for Watch Unlock. The outlet also found several references to UWB-based Watch Unlock not working in various countries that currently do not have this protocol. It means that there is a possibility that this feature will only be available on Pixel Watch 3 in specific regions.
The excerpt mentions that “Ultra-wideband is unavailable in this country. You can still use Watch Unlock but may experience a slight delay and less accuracy.” This certainly is a good thing and could mean that the Pixel Watch 3 will eventually use UWB for Watch Unlock. Keep in mind that the feature is not available for the current watches available from Google.
In addition, note that once Pixel Watch 3 has UWB, it will do more than just Watch Unlock. For those who don't know, the UWB standard is common for digital car keys, better smart home controls, and smart door locks. This means that Google's upcoming smartwatch could become a much smarter device, capable of doing much more.
Another thing that we have learned about the Pixel Watch 3 is that it could be available in a larger 45mm size. Frankly, I am not really a fan of such a large size, but if the watch is constructed in such a way that the bezels are thin and the lugs are slim, then it will look shorter on the wrist.
The Pixel Watch 3 should debut in October, later this year. Considering Google's difficulty keeping a lid on leaks, we should start seeing a lot of information on all Pixel products that Google is working on, including the Pixel 9 series and the Pixel Fold 2.
I am really glad smartwatches are evolving even further, and Google is making an effort not to give up on them. The Pixel Watch 3 is shaping up to be an excellent contender, and if everything goes right, we will have a solid winner in our hands.
