Google had a brilliant strategy in place to generate some much-needed sales for its mid-range smartphone series by equipping them with the same chipset found in the previous year’s flagship family. Unfortunately, a specifications leak suggests that this treatment will not be given to the Pixel 10a next year, as those believing that the latter will ship with the Tensor G5 will be incorporated with an older silicon, not to mention that it will sport slower storage.
New leak points out the ‘stallion’ codename of the Pixel 10a, with the specifications leak stating that the device will feature the Tensor G4 instead of the Tensor G5
For those hoping that the Pixel 10a would ship with the Tensor G5, 9to5Google has reported about the smartphone’s specifications that were shared by Mystic Leaks, with the codename of the mid-ranger said to be ‘stallion.’ Now, we can understand that Google needs to hit a certain price point for its non-flagship series, but to completely gimp the Pixel 10a’s performance will not land the advertising behemoth any favors with consumers. The device in question is listed with a display whose brightness level can go up to 2,000 nits, along with 128GB storage that is operating on the slower UFS 3.1 standard.
Lastly, we have the chipset, and disappointingly, the Pixel 10a will flaunt the Tensor G4 instead of the Tensor G5. Keep in mind that Google used Samsung’s inferior IPoP (Integrated Package on Package) technology instead of FOPLP, or Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging, for the Tensor G3, resulting in the latter being less thermally efficient and, as a result, would overheat when running in Pixel 9a. There is no confirmation on what packaging Google will leverage for the Tensor G4 found in the Pixel 10a, but we also have a feeling that this device lacks a vapor chamber, making matters worse.
It is somewhat understandable that the Tensor G5’s more advanced 3nm N3P technology is more expensive to use than Samsung’s 4nm one for the Tensor G4, but then Google should have a competitive price tag to accompany these trade-offs, or else the Pixel 10a will have fewer chances of standing out from the competition.
