Sam Altman's sister files lawsuit against her brother

Ann Altman, sister of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, had filed a lawsuit against the man behind ChatGPT, claiming that he had abused her regularly between the years 1997 and 2006. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Missouri, with Sam outright denying these allegations.

The lawsuit requests a jury trial and is seeking damages crossing $75,000 against Sam Altman

As a result of gaining immense prominence thanks to the ultra-popular AI-powered chatbot, Sam Altman is no stranger to the spotlight, but that kind of attention has also diverted the wrong set of eyes towards him. On this occasion, CNBC reports that the lawsuit alleges that Sam’s younger sister was sexually abused by him for years, but she has made these claims on X previously, with this being the first time that he is being taken to court. Ann Altman is being represented by Ryan Mahoney, whose Illinois-based firm specializes in matters including sexual assault and harassment.

The lawsuit requests a jury trial and damages that are upwards of $75,000. While the following is unconfirmed, it is possible that Ann Altman specifically requested a jury trial because the individuals would be more sympathetic toward her case. Regardless, Sam Altman’s mother, Connie, and his brothers, Jack and Max, have sided with the OpenAI CEO, stating that Ann has made hurtful remarks about the family, including her brother. Sam has shown the statement on X, which suggests that Ann might be trying to make a quick buck or is mentally ill, with Sam himself labeling these claims as ‘utterly untrue.’

“Over the years, she has accused members of our family of improperly withholding our father’s 401k funds, hacking her wifi, and ‘shadowbanning’ her from various websites including ChatGPT, Twitter, and more. The worst allegation she has made is that she was sexually abused by Sam as a child (she has also claimed instances of sexual abuse from others). Her claims have evolved drastically over time. Newly for this lawsuit, they now include allegations of incidents where Sam was over 18.”

This is not the only lawsuit that OpenAI’s CEO is currently tackling. Back in March 2024, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk sued Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, one of the founding members of the company, stating that they breached the contract. Musk is attempting to prevent OpenAI from turning into a for-profit entity. As for Ann’s lawsuit, it is likely that Sam’s brothers and mother will be summoned to court to provide their accounts of what happened between 1997 and 2006, which should be concrete enough to dismiss these allegations.
