Earlier this week, Nintendo hosted its fourth Nintendo Direct event of 2026, and considering that we're only a few days into March at the time of this writing, that's a pretty condensed window for the Mario company to be setting up what players can look forward to for the year. Today, Nintendo has already announced it will host a fifth Nintendo Direct event next week, but it's not the kind you were hoping for.
Instead of following up Tuesday's Indie World Showcase Direct with a larger, general Nintendo Direct like Nintendo has in the past, the very next Direct event we're getting for the year is a second Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct.
Nintendo already kicked off 2026 with a Direct event dedicated to the upcoming film, and this next one, which will premiere on March 9, 2026, at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm BT will likely be the last one ahead of the film's release on April 1, 2026. It'll also feature the final trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Admittedly, it's not your average year for Nintendo, considering that it won't have a new movie out every year (though it will seemingly have two back-to-back with the Legend of Zelda film aiming for 2027), and we'll hopefully be able to expect its Direct events will return to a more regular cadence.
We're also coming down to the wire for the film's release. In a matter of weeks, it'll be out in theatres for everyone to see, and hopefully, by that time, we'll get the big, significant general direct event that we're all waiting for. The aforementioned Indie World Showcase and a Partner Showcase, both of which focused only on third-party titles, don't give Nintendo fans a concrete idea of what they can expect to play on their shiny new Nintendo Switch 2 systems. At least when it comes to first-party, Nintendo-made games.
So far, the Direct events this year include two Super Mario Galaxy Movie-dedicated Directs, a Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream-dedicated Direct, a Partner Showcase and an Indie World Showcase. Surely a general Direct event is up next? You'd think that, as analysts warn that the Switch 2 is only good for Nintendo-made games and the console's holiday sales in the US didn't quite hit the mark, Nintendo would want to give players more reasons to buy the new hybrid device.
For now, we can only speculate. At least Nintendo Switch 2 players can tuck in with Pokémon Pokopia while they wait for a Duskbloods release date or the reveal of the next major Mario game. And no, Mario Tennis Fever doesn't count.
