The next entry in the God of War series, directed by Cory Barlog, will be an expansion of the series' universe and the first one to not feature Kratos as a protagonist. According to new reports from Mp1st and Reddit, this yet-to-be-announced game will see players explore other mythologies and have some rather weird companions, including a talking sword and a “gelatinous cube.”

The first new rumor about the next entry in the series, long said to be a new IP, came from Reddit user IntrinsicGamer, who penned a report back in 2023 about the game. In their follow-up, the user revealed some additional information:

  1. “It’s starring [Faye], not Freya like I was led to believe before.”
  2. “You have a companion that’s some kind of gelatinous cube.”
  3. “You have a talking sword.”
  4. “Still explores several mythologies, but I was specifically told Mayan stuff is involved.”

Also, the next God of War will feature both Faye and Tyr, as well as Kratos, although his role isn't clear. As Faye has passed away at the time of the 2018 game and Ragnarok, it is likely we could learn precisely how the Jotunn and Kratos actually met.

While MP1st couldn't confirm all the details of the new Reddit post, the outlet did say that several East Asian mythologies will be part of the game, as it features elements from Chinese and Japanese mythologies. This is hardly surprising for anyone who played the last two main entries in the series and knows about some datamined cutscenes suggesting an Egyptian setting for the next entry in the franchise.

Unfortunately, it is not yet clear when this God of War spinoff will be officially announced, though one thing seems certain already: it won't be a multiplatform release, as Sony is reportedly pivoting away from PC ports. However, since it has been teased that a reveal isn't too far off, it probably won't take much longer to see how this game will evolve and expand the series, which is also returning to its roots in the future with remakes of the Greek Saga that made Kratos one of the most recognizable video game characters ever.
