MSI has enabled CXMT memory support on its China-specific AM5 motherboard driver, enabling up to DDR5-8200 speeds.
MSI's China-Specific AM5 Motherboard BIOS Available For Download, Unlocks CXMT DDR5 Memory Support
China is rapidly adopting its domestically produced memory to reduce reliance on offshore brands that are charging heavy prices for their DRAM solutions. As such, CXMT (ChangXin Memory Technologies) has become the go-to choice as it is the country's premier DRAM manufacturer.
While there have been reports that CXMT has started supplying DRAM to global markets, those aren't true yet. CXMT is primarily supplying its memory solutions in the domestic Chinese market, and while talks are underway with the likes of Apple trying to procure inventory as it faces huge shortages for its own products, the deal is yet to be set in stone.
What is happening, though, is that some brands have China-specific PCs being sold in global markets, and we have also reported on how CXMT's advantage isn't in its prices, but its supply.
With that said, MSI has become one of the first motherboard manufacturers to enable CXMT DDR5 memory support on its AM5 motherboards. Previously, domestically produced memory was limited to just 6800 MT/s speeds, but with the new BIOS featuring an updated AMD AGESA firmware, these boards support much higher speeds when running CXMT memory.
In the demonstration, MSI has used its MAG B850MPOWER motherboard, which is a budget-friendly overclocking motherboard. This motherboard is designed with memory overclocking in mind, and we have also tested it. The CXMT memory used for verification was able to achieve over 8000 MT/s speeds, a 20.5% increase in transfer speeds versus what was previously capable.
You can download the BIOS here. Some of the main highlights of the new MSI BIOS include:
- Dual memory slot motherboard: paired with CXMT 16Gb memory, DDR5-8000 stable boot and pass MemTest 100% coverage complete burn test
- CXMT 24Gb memory, DDR5-8200 stable boot and pass MemTest with more than 100% coverage, strict burning machine test, continuous stable operation
- Mainstream 4 memory slots motherboard: frequency ceiling raised synchronously to DDR5-7200
In the first demo, MSI showcased a Lexar 32 GB kit featuring 16Gb ICs from CXMT running at 8000 MT/s speeds. The memory was running at CL40-52-52-126-144 timings with a voltage of 1.40V. It ran stably through RunMemtestPro with an average coverage of 101.63%. The modules are both XMP 3.0 and EXPO 1.1 compatible.
The second test makes use of Kingbank Technology 48 GB DDR5 memory kit rated at 6000 MT/s. This module was overclocked to 8200 MT/s speeds with CL40-52-52-126-200 timings at 1.25V. The test was also stable.
Additionally, MSI states that you can now run four memory sticks on 4-slot motherboards with a frequency support of up to 7200 MT/s. This is just the first of the many tests that we will see using CXMT memory modules. China is aggressively focusing on the use of domestically produced tech products, including memory. CXMT is also expected to double its memory production in the years ahead as it embarks on an "Epic Expansion" project.
