MSI shows how users can implement their proprietary features on X870/X870E motherboards to achieve noticeably higher gaming performance with the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D 3D V-Cache CPU.

MSI Reports Noticeably Better Gaming Performance Through Its Latest 800-Series BIOS-Specific Features on AMD Ryzen 9950X3D CPU

AMD's most powerful gaming and productivity processor, Ryzen 9 9950X3D, doesn't need an additional boost to outperform its closest competitors, but there is no harm in maximizing its potential. In fact, the CPU brings terrific capabilities for improving performance even further, but it depends on various factors at both the hardware and software levels.

MSI says it offers optimal configurations for achieving noticeable performance uplifts with this processor, assuming you use one of their 800-series motherboards, particularly the X870/X870E models. MSI recommends using the latest BIOS and Chipset Driver to achieve up to 10% better performance. The performance uplifts will be game-specific and may not deliver a boost in every game or application.

The latest BIOS v.1A27 with Chipset Driver 7.01.08.129 is claimed to improve performance by 10% in Metro Exodus, 8% in Far Cry 6, and 2% in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The performance can be improved even further with certain features, which we will talk about in a second, but one should remember that these are first-party benchmarks and the final result may differ from one setup to another.

Test System Configuration:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
  • Motherboard: MSI MEG X870E GODLIKE
  • Memory: Galax DDR5-7200 16GBx2
  • GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 5080 16G GAMING TRIO OC
  • SSD: Kingston SNV2S/2000G
  • CPU Cooler: MSI MAG CORELIQUID I360
  • PSU: MSI MEG Ai1300P PCIE5
  • OS: Windows 11 24H2 (Power Mode: Balanced)
  • Game Settings: Black Myth WUKONG – High, The rest: Maximum graphics settings

Nonetheless, MSI says it's recommended to install the AMD Application Compatibility Database driver from the chipset driver package if you have AGESA 1.2.0.3 BIOS installed as it may show "unknown device" in the Device Manager. The next method is to utilize MSI's tool suite in the BIOS, including the Memory Try It!, High-Efficiency Mode, and X3D Gaming Mode to improve performance.

While Memory Try It and High-Efficiency Mode are memory-specific and optimize the timings and speed of the memory, the X3D Gaming Mode optimizes the CPU. MSI has explained how each of these works, so we don't need to repeat them here. As for the results, by enabling all these features, MSI claims up to a 14.5% performance gain in Monster Hunter Wilds and up to 6% in Far Cry 6 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, compared to the default 4800 MT/s speed of 16 GB x2 memory.

Even compared to the 7200 MT/s memory speed, the new 8000 MT/s speed achieved through turning on BIOS features helps achieve 8% better performance in Monster Hunter Wilds. Some games like Black Myth: Wukong and RDR2 may not respond to the newer settings positively, but there are slight benefits in other games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus.
